Okay, so I'll start off by saying that I KNOW it's not the park's fault, but on 2 different occasions now we have tried to take our 2 LOs to the Watermine Water Park and have not been able to get in. The first time we were there before they opened and were told there was a problem with one of the main pumps but it should be up and running in about 15 minutes. After several delays and 1.5 hour later (we rode the boat and carousel several times to keep entertained) we were told they couldn't figure out the problem so had no idea when they would be open. We left.
Now, this afternoon for a second try we geared up and took our 2 DC back to the water park (which is about 30-45 away from us). This time we went a little later in the day to make sure everything was working and after waiting for over 45 mins to get in (they were at capacity and slowly letting people in as others left) we were told there was a contamination issue in the pool and would be shut down for an hour. After debating for a minute and deciding we might stick it out, we were all told that they just got word at the front that it was diarrhea so they have to close at least 13 hours which would obviously shut them down for the day. Ughh!! I know our kids have to learn to roll with what life throws you and our 4.5yo was good about it the first time, but this time she just sobbed all the way home. I know it's no one's fault, but ugh, ugh, ugh!!!! We built it up to her when she was being so good yesterday and helping us with house chores. Weekends in the summer are really precious as DH works almost every weekend during the school year so this really just stinks
thanks for letting me vent. |
| Where do you live? There are plenty of other waterparks in the area. I'm sure that there are some closer to you that would be just as fun as the Water Mine. |
| Sorry you guys went through that, My husband works long hours overnights and most weekends.. I know how frustrating it can be to make special family plans and than have them ruined. And to have it happen at the same place twice must be SUPER frustrating! |
| Maybe try a smaller one, like Pirates Cove at Pohick Bay? |

Here is a list of all the ones run by the park authority:

| My children used to go with camp..and always complained there were no tubes available and it was boring. We have not gone as a family.. |

Oh, we almost went this morning and didn't. I'm so glad. It is so frustrating when an outing ends badly.
OP, my kids LOVE the themed pools at Algonkian park and Bull Run park. We always get there right when they open (at 11) and they are clean and we have not had any contamination or line issues. |

I think the problem with pools is that the don't check that kids wearing diapers are also wearing plastic pants on top. I think they need to CHECK each diaper wearing kid. Most of the kids I see with diapers on, do not have the plastic pants, except mine. And I can say it makes all the difference.

| Just be glad Fairfax County closes the place until it's sanitary. All these places get contamination issues. Personally i hate when parents are in the adult pools with diaper babies. |
| Parents should not go in the adult pools with diaper babies - YUCK! Is there no consideration? |
| This post is educational to me!! I had never thought about all of those issues, and we're just getting ready to start taking my two year old to these kinds of places.. which ones are good and clean and which ones are not? |
| I know that at Bull Run (Atlantis) they do not allow diaper babies in the main pool. |
| Do those "swimmer" diapers not work or something? I've only taken DD swimming once (both this summer and last summer she kept getting ear infections) and it was in my MIL's pool.. We used those diapers and there are also plastic pants that go over diapers.. I was planning on taking my little one to the pool at our apartment complex.. I guess I just assummed those things worked. |
Swim diapers work just fine. I've never used plastic pants over a swim diaper, have never been asked to, and have never had an issue with leakage of anything. But diarrhea . . . I imagine there isn't a whole lot a swim diaper OR a plastic cover can do to prevent that from getting into a pool. What a shame. |
This is not true, or at least not enforced. I take my swim-diapered toddler in the big pool all the time. Is there some reason not to take swim-diapered kids in the main pool? If this was the rule, my older child would never be able to go in the main pool (since there are two kids, and one me). |
