There are several students accepted at UNC from FCPS every year. A classmate of my kid from Fairfax High School band got a full scholarship for music a few years back. It happens. |
UVA is more conservative than UNC. |
I'm not sure why this even matters. The people highlighting this bilge is on one side... most campuses lean left and conservative students don't skip a beat. It's the fragile "tolerant" libs that howl the loudest and own the stage that harbor the most angst. Miserable people. |
Maybe student gets into UNC, but is rejected at UVA. |
I think OP is looking for reasons to apply. Not to *not* apply. ![]() |
My brother graduated from UNC - out of state - All American recruited athlete - heck UNC admitted his average student girlfriend from out of state because they wanted him so badly. No one who knows their athletic department well is surprised. 4.0/ Phi Beta Kappa in math and again multiple D1 All American. He was held up to be an example of the "Carolina Way", which is mostly hype but found to be accurate in spots. He thought highly of UNC, save for the Greek system which he never understood. Years later he was a professor of Economics at UVa. Had the same issues with the Greek system, which he felt did not further the academic objectives of the university. Found the schools to be remarkably alike, and would say that UVa in-state is an easy call over UNC and vice versa. If admitted to both schools out of state, then a much closer decision. My late father was a UNC basketball player in the 50's, a bench sitter on the Lenny Rosenbluth team which won the national championship. My father did not finish UNC, but always had an idyllic view of the school with its history dating to the late 1700's which my brother and I did not share. Still a very nice school. Can't go wrong with either place. Both Carolinians and Virginians are fortunate to have UNC and State and UVa, W & M and VTech. I am from Illinois which after U of I Champaign Urbana has a huge gap in terms of schools. |
If they like it, go for it. It is easier from our 3 top privates OOS (VA) than it is to get into Duke /ivies, and is similar in acceptance rates to UCLA and UCB for these high schools. Not a super reach if stats are there |
I had to be back at UNC for business when I was teaching at UVA. A UNC kid I was talking to (from NC) shared that he got waitlisted at UVA, his dream school. But he got into UNC and came to realize that he loved UNC for the same reasons he loved UVA. A lot of grad students at both universities end up being professors at what is basically their sister institution. |
Previous UNC chancellor (now President at Michigan State) has PhD from UVA. |
And UVa is not a safety for anyone these days; its a lottery. |
Agree with this. And 18%seems high. Are you sure that’s right? |
I think they need to be in contention for an ivy to get in UNC out of state. |
I think it depends on the major. My DD has a friend from NJ who was just admitted for creative writing. She went TO (had an SAT score in the 1300’s). She must have had a killer essay! |
You must not know anything about UVA |
