Cash birthday gifts for nieces and nephews

Anonymous
Instead of a “gift”. Everyone is getting older and there are a lot in the extended family. How much would you give, and what age to start?

Probably start around age 10. $25 starting and go up.

We do this often, usually $50-$100

100 always

$20 - start when they start understanding money, about 5 or 6

Starting at age 11 I give them $40 gift cards for birthdays and Christmas. Used to be $50, but then my brother kept having more and more kids.

So first, I think that it's also outside extended families to give cash gifts. In my opinion, this doesn't just apply to nieces and nephews, but also to grandchildren and our kids. I don't know about you, but we are often not aware of the trends. So long as it's not too expensive, and the trend is at least halfway reasonable, that's the cleverer approach for us. This makes the kids happier. And we don't need to think too much about it. Regarding the amount, it depends on the age and the child. When the child starts to realize about the importance of money, 20 $ makes sense. From the age of about 10, the amount can be 50 to 100 $ or so.

I give gift cards to stores I know they like, along with a card, and a type of candy I know they like. In the card I include that I'd love to take them shopping at the store and out for lunch/snack/Starbucks/whatever I know appeals to them. About two thirds of the time they take me up on the offer.

Oh, thank you so much for that suggestion! Admittedly, I hadn't thought about the gift card options in combination with a candy. Instead of candy, I think it could also be a plush toy or a little something for the desk / children's room, a USB stick, etc. Then I must confess that I don't know enough about the habits of two nieces, and in these cases giving money definitely makes more sense. But for the other children and teenagers in our families, this certainly represents an interesting solution.

It took my daughter until the age of 12 to understand or care about money. At 5 or 6 they still want toys or activities.

Will stop with all of it once they graduate

I have 2 nieces age 11 and 14. I give each $100 for birthday and Christmas another $100. They are getting older and know what they want to buy. I have no clue what they are into and cash is always the best gift in that case.

Gift cards to stores/restaurants you know they like are fine but please do not give them the Visa (or MC) gift cards. We’ve run into a ton of issues with them over the years.

We give this. Started around the time they turned 12 years old.
