Help me identify this river town in MD

Anonymous
Several months ago, maybe even a year, Washingtonian Magazine did a little profile on a historic river town in MD that has a river festival every summer. The picture showed people in kayaks and canoes, a little boardwalk along the river and lots of cute shops and restaurants. I've searched the online archives but can't find the article - do you know town I may be thinking of? Thanks!

Thanks but I don't think so. It was less rustic then this - people in canoes and kayaks in a river that immediately bordered a lovely promenade with shops and restaurants. Some small town in MD - I remember thinking - boy - that looks like a nice place to live some day. Maybe Ellicot City??

Can you remember whether it was a "coastal" river, like Potomac or Chesapeake? Or instead an inland river, like Shenandoah? That would help narrow it down. If you're guessing Ellicot City (Patapsco River), I'm thinking you mean an inland river, but I just want to check.

I think inland. And maybe there wasn't a festival and it was just a profile of a cute little town, within a day trip from DC. I'm hopeless I know I'll blame it on the pregnancy

I'll think about it. If I can come up with anything, I'll post. Sorry I don't have a ready answer for you.

Chestertown? Definitely a cute little town on the (Chester) River, about 1.5 hours away. But the shops don't line the river; they're perpendicular to it and start about a block up. Best event - the 4th of July reenactment of the Tea Party that Chestertown residents at that time did in support of their Boston peers. So quaint.

or Oxford, or Cambridge, or Berlin, or St Michael's, or Deal, or Smith Island, or Colonial Beach, or Smith Island, or Tilghman, any other town that has water

St. Michael's has cute shops/restaurants. Some wood docks & boardwalks. And a bunch of festivals.

The one that brings out all of the kayaks, canoes, etc. is the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival - held in the early fall.

Does this look familiar:
