We have a VERY small basement (300 sq feet) that is finished but stuck in the 1980s. I’d like to transform the space into a cool theater room (lighting, built ins for storage). Most of this work is cosmetic, not structural. We live in Bethesda. Any suggestions for a good designer or contractor? Also, any guess in how much something like this might cost? (Painting, flooring to replace old carpet, built ins, ceiling with good lighting?) |
I would spend a little bit of $$ on a designer and then sub everything else out. I have found from my own experience the best electricians aren’t necessarily the best custom cabinet builders and for a small just like this you don’t want to overpay a GC.
I specifically had this experience where the GC did a great job on flooring in my basement but the built in cabinets weren't great. I should have used a cabinetmaker. Price-wise, Designer $2-3k Flooring (LVP or tile) $5k including baseboards Painting $1k Sheetrock ceiling with recessed lights $3k Built-ins this is so widely variable based on materials and if it is a whole wall or just an “entertainment shelf” $5-10k |
OP here. This is super, super helpful! Thank you! I’m a project manager not in this industry, but agree with your rec, and have had luck farming out various parts of smaller projects in the past. Given the small space I do want to make it as high quality as I can.

I recommend https://www.chevychaseremodeling.com/
but have no idea of their current scheduling/availability |
OMG no. They did work for us and they were just awful. The guy who runs it cannot communicate effectively and hires bargain basement subcontractors. We have had to have so many things redone because of their incompetence. |
Thank you!!
