Any artist moms out there?

Anonymous
We just moved to the area with our 2.5 yo. My DH works full time and I just recently finished my MFA. I am wondering if there are other moms of preschoolers out there that are visual artists? Do you have a day job in addition to your art making? How do you find time for your own work on top of your job, family and home obligations? I currently work full time and do not have a studio to work in. Even if I did, I don't know if I would have the time or energy to make art. Is there even an art scene around here? I have been looking into finding a studio space and have not had any luck. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

DC art scene is completely lame and full of poseurs. The "poets" are the worst. You could vomit from it. They write child rearing books, too. Because in DC every one thinks they know everything. I think there maybe be something in the swampy tap water that makes them think anyone outside of this area gives a rat's ass.

I am a professional photographer. Though, I have never really been into the art scene. I love art and galleries, but prefer to peruse them at my leisure...when I have time!

Photography is my full time job along with being a Mom. I spend many of my evenings after DC is asleep working...but for me it is fun and relaxing.

I know I am not an "artist" per se, but I do a lot of compositions using selected images. That is the art part of my photography. I do portrait work to pay the bills!

We live in Baltimore, and though I'm not a visual artist (I write, or aspire to), I've met a lot of artsy moms in Baltimore, many of whom are MICA graduates. This doesn't really answer any of your questions, but if you're ever hankering for an arts scene, come up 95! (Oh, and check out ArtScape this weekend: http://www.artscape.org/)

9:17, thanks! I've heard from a few people that Baltimore has somewhat of a happening art scene. I'll have to check it out.

9:12 - I would totally consider you an artist! You're just lucky that it is also your full time job I need to figure out how to do that. . .

Another artist here. I used to paint all the time, but haven't picked up a brush in about a year. Used to be an art director, now a designer/dancer and occasional illustrator.

I've seen art studio space advertised on CL. Torpedo Factory in Alexandria also rents out space to artists.
