Karen, I have a simple solution: require YOUR kid to wear shin guards (i.e. make sure they are on him or her when you drop them off from the minivan), and don't worry about anyone else. Boom, done. |
Better reason to wear shin guards: they are required in every match and it will be enforced.
"Play like you practice"--it's different wearing shin guards, and sometimes you can pick out the kids who never wear them in training by clumsy touches. |
Shin guards are a good thing to wear but really, what is the OP afraid is going to happen? A kid (not theirs) gets hurt and learns their lesson? We aren’t talking about a football player not wearing a helmet |
Nobody is wearing them at my teen boys high school or club practices/scrimmages.
Some leagues require them and refs check all players pre-game, but I find older players aren’t wearing them. |
A bump or bruise is all that happens. |
OP here. DD is in another HS camp this week with Potomac Soccer Club. Glad to hear they are required to wear shin guards the entire time. |
This is as dumb a comment as the no heading comment. Grow up and let your children live. |
Oh my kids are living their best lives and the one who plays soccer wears her shin guards. Thanks though. |
Shin guards are considered not cool by alot of the kids. I make my kid wear his when he gets out the car and he's usually honest enough to do it most of the time. Most coaches at bethesda do tell the kids to wear them if it's obvious but they are not babysitters. |
Nope. I spoke to the came administrator and they told me it was up to the kid and they don't make them wear them. This is a camp at Richard Montgomery HS. Glad I only signed up for one week. Every other camp my daughter has done has required them, and her HS always requires during practices. Bethesda is very laid back and pathetic if you ask me. |
I nominate this thread as one of DCUM’s weirder instances of helicoptering, and that’s saying something. |
I second the nomination. I could understand OP’s frustration if the camp was letting young kids slide or head the ball, but shin guards for older kids?? Come on. |
I third this nomination and I freely admit to be an intense helicopter parent. I also used to play soccer. Shin guards prevent bruises, nothing more. Plus, kids that aren’t hacking away (older players) don’t need them. |
You sound like a helicopter parent. What you think is happening is not and your kids are talking about you behind your back. |
Like others said. Have your kid wear her shin guards. Done. Don't worry about the other kids.
Next, we'll be saying head bands are required for the safety of keeping hair out of the eyes. |
