My daughter, who is 9, is very interested in art. She does lots of her own projects and seems to have a good feel for color and shape. Her drawing skills are about what you'd expect for a nine-year-old. I wouldn't single her out as exceptionally talented but she certainly has a creative drive to express herself.
She's taken art classes and gone to art camp and come away kind of frustrated, as a lot of them were more "crafty." I think she'd enjoy actually learning to draw or techniques of painting. However, I can't seem to find any offered for her age. At what age do people generally start learning art techniques? Any recommendations on how to encourage her? Thanks! |
I've taken a few classes at the Corcoran (still life and figural drawing).
They also have classes and camps for kids: http://www.corcoran.org/family/camp_creativity.php |
Get the book "Drawing With Children by Mona Brooks.

The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria offers classes. I think Glen Echo Park does as well. |
I'm not sure if they still have them, but you might try the Smithsonian. I took painting technique classes there as a kid, and we set up our easels outside on the mall to paint the surrounding architecture. |
Maybe you could find some art majors wanting to make a little extra cash, and they could give your daughter a few lessons. |
