Daughter is 9 and only played rec. She is good and shows potential, but she plays lots of sports and has never really spent a ton of dedicated effort to skill development in soccer.
She has an offer for PPL Premier Yellow. Logistically that is tough for us and the team appears to be added on as a response to a lot of interest. We are waiting to hear from some other tryouts but were curious whether we should be enthusiastic over PPA because we have heard mixed things. Our priority is that she has a good experience and gets a chance to develop with strong coaching to see if she can progress. Thoughts on PPA vs risking try outs at clubs with seemingly better reputations (e.g., Arlington / Alexandria)? |
PPA primarily practices in MD and plays at the MD Soccerplex at that levels on the weekends. Also, the other girls on the teams are almost always from MD inner burbs or NW DC, so I suggest you go with a club closer to where you live. Practices twice a week are sometimes as early as 4:30pm or end as late as 8pm on week nights, so I think with traffic this could be a haul for your family. My 2 cents. I don't know exactly where you live in VA or what your family situation is, but with rush hour it can be tough commuting from anywhere. |
Thank you, very helpful. Yes, logistics are certainly a consideration for us. |
PPA is a great program, but go with a closer team.
At the Yellow level of PPA, you're basically playing at a rec level, and that's really not worth a long commute for. |
Is Yellow the lowest level of PPA (lower than orange)? I can’t even find it for U10 in their program guide. I think OP is right. They added this team as a response to a lot of interest. |
OP, are you in VA or DC/MD? At that age, go with the club that has the best logistics.
I can say that PPA generally puts new players on one of the lower teams at that age, but they also absolutely move kids up and down- so its highly possible that if your kid is skilled, they might wind up double carding on the first or second team by spring. But regardless, go with the club that is the least painful commute. |
