Peeps. I'm a non-playing soccer dad trying to make sense of the hot mess of soccer.
I created this first draft to explain to my daughter what options are out there for her.
What would you change on this document? I've enabled comments so don't be a D***.

  • I would consider high school soccer to offer zero "visibility" to college soccer. Nobody recruits there.

  • I am not aware of any ECNL team in this area that does not allow HS soccer participation.

  • Although 10 month seasons are the norm for the higher levels, there is a concentration in the fall. Spring schedules are somewhat lighter.

  • ODP level of play falls somewhere near GDA level. Few ECNL players play ODP these days.

For ECNL and GA, worth noting that there is significant travel. League games could be several hours drive. Some events include plane travel. Primary purpose of these leagues is college recruiting.

ECNL-R should probably be mentioned. Somewhat similar to EDP with regional games.

EDP is mischaracterized in that there are still college visibility but not through the league. EDP teams can play in showcase tournaments along with ECNL and GA teams where college recruiters will attend. Jefferson Cup, WAGS are are examples. This also applies to ECNL-R.

Also a lot depends on the club and team and coach, maybe even more than the league.

Thanks for creating this, I downloaded it and will likely share it with a few parents trying to figure some of these things out as well.

    Cheers!

@SocAnon wait for version 2 which I'll post tomorrow. Want to see if there is any other notes and check those with people in real life then I'll update the sheet.

-Most Virginia ECNL clubs are a 7 month commitment (high school ages), unless you make the playoffs. Then you just practice a little before them in June, but the game schedule is mainly Sept thru beginning of March.
-ODP is good for kids not in ECNL or GA, but I really wouldn't bother with it if you have access to other offseason things like Futsal or indoor. Maybe private training, but not huge fan of that either. Depends on the coach.
-High School soccer won't give you much college visibility unless you win some big accolades like state player of the year or All American. I would still play it, but don't expect much traction from it.

Worth asking: are you in VA? We’re in MoCo and there aren’t any GA clubs nearby, we would have to travel to Baltimore or VA. Anything over EDP is Bethesda ECNL or nothing.

    Great work.

One thing to note is that high school soccer is a spring sport in VA. However it's a fall sport in MD, DC, and for most/all private schools.

It’s actually much less confusing than it was even two years ago. At that time you had the DA and ECNL fighting for supremacy. You also had ODSL and CCL for other lower league options.
