Volleyball - 5th grade girl - where to start

Anonymous
My 5th grade daughter is interested in getting involved in volleyball. She is a beginner. Good athlete, tall, fast. Where should I start? We are in Springfield, VA. I see most of the rec programs for the spring are already in progress. I'd be happy to pay for clinics as that may work better with our schedule. The sport seems to get intense quickly. We are already very involved with soccer and somewhat swim so I am not interested right now in another huge commitment. Thanks for any tips as I am new to all this.

SYC has rec volleyball that sounds right for your kid. Registration is closed for this spring, but you could try contacting them

Wherever she goes, make sure they are teaching the technical fundamentals.

Try Bishop O'Connell or Bishop Ireton -- they both have summer camps for volleyball. The St. James also does several weeks of summer volleyball camp. I believe George Mason University also offers an all day volleyball camp.

Then your daughter will be ready to play for the fall session when the rec league registration opens up.

My kid (9th grader) is in her first year on a travel VB team at The St. James. She did not pick up the sport until 8th grade (middle school). To be fair, the kid has been playing soccer since pre-kindergarten. She has six years of travel soccer (via FPYC) experience, so some of the development has likely transferred over to volleyball.

Since you are near/close to Springfield, I can tell you that they are hosting beginner clinics every Friday evening. I don't know if these sessions are part of a series (where you had to start at the beginning) or if you can just sign up for the next session.

Looks like a new Tuesday series is about to start on April 18th.

Darn. The Saint James is full. If there are any other classes you know of, let me know. I am looking for something like that.

My DD is taking a volleyball class at Audrey Moore Rec Ctr.

Check Parktakes for classes.

SYC and BRYC are already in session. You can try, but you're really late OP.

My HS freshman beginner is doing the HS pick-up league through SYC and really likes it. He is on a beginner team, with a good, patient coach. Even though they are in season, I would call/email SYC and ask whether there is a spot on one of the 5th grade teams. They may have an open spot -- it can't hurt to ask.

ECP DC has a spring league that is Saturdays only? (I think) They have pretty good coaching for younger kids and fun leagues in the summer too- those are not posted yet.

Why are the balls so hard? I can’t even play for fun because my hands hurt so bad.

NVVA Galaxy does a good job at that age and makes it fun.
For good technique, go to Virginia Elite or VAVA summer
clinics.

+1 but NVVA is far from Springfield. I’d contact St. James and ask what they are going to offer for the summer.

No Panic has Pink Shirt Academy. I’m not sure if it’s already started
