One of my kids was like this, but the GI bugs were more short lived (usually one day of sickness than one day after, before going back to school). Her 2 siblings rarely caught it (and DH and I usually did not either). She was just always prone to it, and ped was never particularly concerned. Has no other health concerns or issues. She seemed to grow out of it by late elementary/middle school. She is in 8th grade and I don’t think she has had a GI bug in a couple of years now.

Some people are just more prone to being susceptible to certain things. It has a lot to do with the host and immunity and how those things interact with each other. There are also certain people who have a gene that is protective against norovirus and never get it- so all of this stuff works both ways. Definitely go to pediatric GI to ease your mind, but if your child's symptoms fully resolve, it probably is just bad luck. |

More like a 6 hour bug each time. |
Are there any other symptoms with the vomiting? Such as fever, headache, or even respiratory symptoms? |
Same here. We know it was stomach bugs because they rolled through all three of my kids. It’s been a very tough school year.
One of my children has had consistent nausea following these, and doc put her on a two week dose of daily Pepcid to help settle things down. |
DP. I dont agree with this - we don’t define a stomach bug just from vomiting several hours on end. It might be vomiting, it might be a few days of stomach aches and diarrhea, it might be consistent nausea. Not everything is a violent norovirus type of incident. |
Our DD gets some thing like that’s where it lasts anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, vomiting and nausea. DD would look super pale and end up taking a quick nap which was unusual. Turns out it was migraines. It was happening about once a month. |
Yes, this is the exact thing that happens with my son too. |
Unfortunately a stomach bug can change your gut biome and make you susceptible to more bugs. You can try working in building up her gut biome with probiotics, etc. |
This exact thing happens with my son too. Our ped is not helpful and said to see a neurologist. Have you don’t anything that has helped? Our family has had 3 stomach viruses cycle through everyone this school year, plus one of my children has celiac and the other has the migraines. So much vomit in my house. I think before this year, we maybe had 1 stomach thing once a year or every other year. This year has been brutal. |
Our family sees a neurologist for a separate issue. We talked to them about the stomach migraines. They said to see if we could figure out what was triggering them, staying up too late, certain foods, etc and to my child’s dismay, we did discovered that two of the three most recent times they had a Slurpee the night before, and we have found they are very sensitive to those kind of dyes in foods. (it was very random that they happened to have a Slurpee two weeks in a row as we rarely have them). Our neurologist said unless you’re having migraines more than once a week they do not recommend medication. At the first sign of the nausea/stomach ache, or when they think it’s coming on (an aura), to give them child’s Motrin. This is seem to work in our case. |
I keep a diary to try to identify triggers, but it's hard to know if we're identifying the right ones. So far the triggers seem to be similar to the ones that give me migraines: dehydration, lack of sleep, concentrated red 40 dye. My son is also getting pretty good at knowing when one is coming on, so I give him some Ibuprofen or Tylenol right away and put him in a dark room, and sometimes that's enough to keep it from spiraling into a full episode. When we went to the neurologist, they basically prescribed keeping a diary of the migraines, and then also prescribed some sort of B vitamin that has been proven to reduce migraines. |
Thank you pp’s!! We’ve been identifying food triggers and red dye is definitely one, along with msg. |
Following. Since January my DD, 7, complains of stomach pain and has intermittent diarrhea, like maybe once a week. Since toddlerhood, she's struggled with constipation, so the runny stools was something new for us. She does belch and seems like she might have a little Gerd/backup. She's also doing the yogurt/probiotic for kids. Our pediatrician said the only way to start is a food diary. She didn't think it was any kind of virus. Tough to track what goes on with school, though. |
