breathing problems in pregnancy??

Anonymous
I'm 24 weeks and have had wheezing, coughing and breathing problems (off and on) for the past few weeks. My Allergist, OB and GP all assume it's my allergies but even wtih taking my allergy meds (per my OB's orders), I'm still having horrible breathing issues (ie, coughed all day yesterday and today I'm all out of breath, even just sitting here at my desk). It feels like asthma - or at least what I imagine asthma to feel like. Or maybe it's something else?

FWIW, I've always had standard allergies but they've NEVER been like this - mostly the general runny nose, itchiness, watery eyes type of thing. I've never had breathing problems.

I've got yet another appointment with my GP today but I just wanted to see if this had happened to other women. Thanks!

I had breathing issues - certainly later on in both pregnancies...I have, over the last three years or so, developed adult asthma and this may have had something to do with it, BUT I certainly remember NOT liking the feeling of not catching my breath...SO - ask your doctor...

I'm 26 weeks along and have had very similar breathing/runny nose problems throughout the pregnancy. Apparently this is called "rhinitis" and it's very normal in pregnancy. Copying and pasting this from www.pregnancy-info.net:

"Pregnancy rhinitis occurs when your nasal passageways become irritated and inflamed during pregnancy. As a result, you experience nasal congestion, sneezing, and a runny nose. It is very similar to allergic rhinitis, except that it does not appear to be caused by any environmental allergens or toxins."

The bottom line is that it's definitely extremely annoying but you shouldn't worry that something's wrong with you or the baby. But in the mean time, I share your pain!

I had shortness of breath too. Definitely sounds like allergies but for me I was also tired fatigue and very sleep at 26 weeks. They checked my blood count at 28 weeks and I was very anemic. Make sure that's not the case. Or just start taking SlowFe and see if it helps.

I had the same problem and would go for short periods without being able to breath at all. i would try my inhaler, but it didn't change anything. my ob ran tests and sent me to a specialist, but nothing was found. it lasted from about 24 to 29 weeks, but felt like forever. now that i am 32 weeks i feel much better am still stuffy, but can breath. it really worried me that the baby was not getting oxygen. if you do find out what causes some of these symptoms, please post it. you aren't the only one and certainly not the only one to worry. good luck.

OP here - turns out that I have a case of bronchitis which caused me to have asthmatic symptoms. I was given antibiotics and an inhaler. I used the inhaler twice a day for the last two days and just once this morning. I'm feeling better and can DEFINITELY breathe better but it's not perfect.
I think the underlying breathing issues (not like I was having on Monday - those were scary) are a result of allergies. My allergist gave me a breathing test a few weeks ago and all was fine soooo I may just have to suffer through this.
I see my OB on Tuesday for a regular appt. so I'll be sure to respond back if she thinks there's more to it. Thanks for the responses!
