I have a 10 year old newly diagnosed with auditory processing disorder. Can you suggest any schools (private, public or charter) that offer services for our special child? Thank you. |
Has your child had a full educational evaluation?
All depending on the severity, I would suggest McLean for students who are not too affected. They are about $25K per year. Lab for those who are more moderate/severe - they are about $40K per year. Or if you live in MoCo or Fairfax, public could be a very good option if you get your child on an IEP. Supplement with tutoring if there is difficulty in school. Both Lab and Stixrud offer tutoring for children with LDs. |
Thank you for your response. He hasn't had a "full evaluation" just an auditory evaluation so far. We've had issues with DCPS evaluating him appropriately for speech and language. We will likely get eveluations done independently (like auditory tests). Do you have any guidance you can offer? We can discuss offline if you want, leers28@hotmail.com. Thanks. |
The Lab School has great SLP's |
Hi OP - this is 16:46.
I think your DS really needs an evaluation and sooner rather than later as he is already 10 years old - making intervention critical. Not sure if a complete evaluation is in order as it depends on how he was given the DX of auditory processing disorder. Have you always suspected an issue? Who diagnosed him? How is it manifesting itself? How is his learning being affected? We had a horrible experience with our evaluator, so I cannot recommend him. Many on this board have gone through the educational/neuro-psych evaluation process, and I am sure many can recommend a tester. be prepared to spend btwn $2k-$3K for a full eval - if that is the route you choose. Also, if you choose to go the private school route you will be required to submt results of a full educational evalution (WISC IV etc). good luck! keep us posted. |
a special school is not necessary.
You need to do some research on auditory processing disorders. This effects his whole life and he needs to be able to compensate. Intensive therapy will be needed if he is already 10. |
what age is this normally diagnosed? how? what comes up at school in the younger years that might be a warning sign? |
My friend's son recently got this diagnosis. He was in K and seemed out of it and kind of spaced out sometimes. He wouldn't answer questions and only did work if there was a teacher sitting right near him or next to him. He had trouble with rhyming words and reading in general. |
This sounds like my DC, who was diagnosed with a mixed receptive/expressive language disorder, and phonological processing disorder, as well as ADD (inattentive). Taking speech and pragmatic language at the Lab School this past year has helped a lot. |
PP, who did you child see for the diagnosis? A tester? doctor? someone at lab? |
An SLP at the Lab School tested her. |
11:08 - this is 16:46/7:18.
You just described my DS!! he has the same, exact dx - which we got from Kennedy Krieger after a failed attempt from a local educational assessor. DS is a current first grader, denied admission to Lab and McLean. At first we were devistated as we thought that not going to private would be a sure "nail in the coffin". We're over it now of course and no longer believe that. Going to supplement with tutoring this summer at Stixrud for executive functioning and writing (not the physical part but the getting it on paper part). He is also on an IEP in MoCo for speech, OT, and reading. |
To 11:17, could you pass along the name of the SLP? Did you just call Lab to set it up?
To 12:12 - when you say the getting it on paper part -that sounds like what my child is struggling with - lots of thoughts and can write ok, but when it's time to sit down and just write something gets stumped. Also difficulty answering open ended questions. Teachers not really concerned, but I am. Advice? |
This is 12:12
Mother's instinct is almost ALWAYS correct, so follow yours. Yes, this is exactly what my DS is having trouble with and it is an area of great concern - if you do not get it under control now. Are you in MoCo? I am shocked that the teachers are not concerned. Not trying to freak you out, sorry. Just want to make sure that you understand how much written language plays a part in the success of our kiddos. My DS has great ideas, good comprehension but cannot get it on paper to save his life. He gets frustrated and then just scribbles a bunch of gobbeldy-gook. If they cannot express themselves properly on paper, it could mean tremendous difficulties for them down the road. As I mentioned, he will be working with Stixrud this summer on that skill, along with executive functioning - another key skill that many times is ignored. |
This is 11:17; we had testing through Stixrud which identified the problem prior to the start of K, and I just called the Lab school and talked with the SLP department (as that is whom they referred me to). The SLP intake person asked for the report and then reccomended the most relevent SLPs and sessions that were most relevant to the need. DC has two, one for the processing and phonology and another for the pragmatics issue. We did SLP for about 6 months before I asked for a formal test to see if we could get services through the school as well. The testing was informative, but sadly DC is not "1/5 standard deviations from the mean" and does not qualify for school services. The Lab School also has a summer camp program and intensive SLP programs |
