We need to find a shadow for our son, who will be in preschool this fall. Where should we look to hire one? Thanks. |
What's a shadow? Like an aide? |
I had good luck finding someone by posting an ad on the AU JobCorps website.

I contacted the Special Education department at University of Maryland and got several good candidates for a part-time position. There is also a site called Barefoot Students that provided some hits (it is like Craigslist for students). Also, ask your childcare provider if they know someone who might want the position. Best of luck! |
my son will be in school full time in the fall. I would like to talk to you about it. please leave your email and I will contact you.
Thanks. |
Will the county provide anything for you? |
care.com has a area fo speical needs |
Can someone please address the question "what is a shadow"? I'm trying to determine is my son needs one as welll. Thank you. |
My take on a shadow (ideally): Someone who will work one-on-one with your child to help them be as successful (included) as possible at school. They should be warm, fun, patient, with good intuition, creative and possess knowledge in a variety of areas. Knowledge of areas like child development, speech and language techniques, occupational therapy techniques, physical therapy techniques, facilitation of social interaction, pre academics, teaching self help skills, and behavior modification techniques is very helpful because many (if not all) of these areas are addressed at some point during the school day for most children. |
PP here:
Of the shadows I've observed (or by other parent's reports), many were over paid babysitters whose function was to keep the child from running off, hurting others and out of the teacher's hair. They didn't seem to possess the experience needed to provide much help to the child. |
