help with eczema!

My 3 year old has eczema. It fluctuates throughout the year, and has never really been a problem... until now.

His poor little hands are so raw and bumpy, and they hurt him.

We're trying to keep his hands as dry as possible (nearly impossible with a grubby, active 3 year old whose favorite play toy is mud!)
We have some cream that has worked in the past, but its not working (or not working enough) anymore.

I really hate to go the route of steriod-based creams (although I may have to).

Does anyone have recommendations for safe OTC lotions/creams that have worked for their kids? Any other tips?

Crabtree and Evelyn's gardeners lotion.

my toddler has eczema too. we've been using hydracortizone and crisco over it. the crisco sounds disgusting but it actually works. and it's not toxic. we have been going through rougher phases with this too. most of the time we only use crisco all over after a bath but every once in a while we put the hydracortizone on first in the trouble spots. the crisco is even okay on her face if she licks it. pediatrician recommended this. i'm not making it up. it's totally weird though and it's hard to get past what it is. it's super cheap though and it works. good luck. it's really hard to have your baby have eczema.

My 4 month old has bad eczema too, and we have been doing Eucerin Aquaphor 3 times a day and running a vaporizer in his room. It really seems to be helping.

Good luck!

Hi my son had really bad eczema and we used every cream in the world and nothing seemed to help. However, Cetaphil cleanser and lotion does wonders also and my doctor recommended leaving out dairy products and it did wonders it took a second to get use to alternative foods but I made the change and it has done wonders for him he hasnt had a breakout in months you should def. try it. Hope this helps

Vanicream. It is OTC but the pharmacist needs to order it for you. Only cream that is formaldehyde free.

PP here. OTC is over the counter. Our allergist told us to use it on son's eczema. We saw Dr. Athena Economides who was referred to us by someone on this board.

When my 11-month-old breaks out, I put Cortaid on her breakout spots, then Egyptian Magic (it's a beeswaxy kind of thing from Whole Foods) and then CeraVe cream from CVS. I layer them in the order I listed here.

We bathe her with Aveeno Eczema Wash. I think Cetaphil probably works too.

Oh yeah, and a humidifier. She has a cow shaped one from Target!

I know this was a really old thread but trying to figure out what is causing my son's eczema. I think it is food related but it is really hard to pinpoint the cause. I thought eggs and dairy but cupcakes and treats at school and etc.. have dairy and/or eggs and since he doesn't have a full blown allergy to them it is hard to figure out what is causing it. Anyone else figure it out?

I have used calendula cream which has worked for my DD eczema and DS dry skin. Either Weleda or California Baby products.

We use this, it's the only thing that works!

I love Cetaphil CREAM. I get a big jar from costco, and use it ike 6 times a day, and it seems to keep my babys skin look healthy.

The fragrance in this lotion would sting and burn an eczema spot. Any scented lotions are very bad for eczema.

We thought food was causing our eczema but it was just the weather. Our eczema goes away in the summer and resurfaces in October. Even with the humidifier, lotions (vanicream which works wonders), dreft and watching his skin, DS still only get the spots and dry skin in the winter.
