When to buy nursing bras?

Anonymous
Just a few weeks left until my due date, and I am wondering when the right time to buy nursing bras is. I had read that breast size will or at least can increase after your milk comes in. So, I don't want to purchase them now just to have to get new ones later. Originally, I had wanted to have the LC's at the hospital fit me, and buy bras there, but my milk will probably not have come in until after discharge. How much bigger can they get? Is it just temporary during engorgement?

I got mine at around 36 weeks or so because I'd outgrown the bras I was wearing (again). I got one of the regular nursing bras with the fold down flap and I got one sleep bra. While I like the sleep bra style a lot better while I was still pregnant and didn't care for the flap bras, my opinions totally switched once I delivered. I found that the flap bras have enough room in there to allow for a nursing pad and can accomodate a lot of the engorgement you might get right as your milk comes in.

You can get some bras now, just don't stock up. Turns out that mine were fine, so I sent my mom out a few days after I delivered to pick up a few more in the style I liked. They've gotten me through 2 kids and are about to step up again for the 3rd....

I would buy one or two now, so you're prepared when the baby is born ... I love the Bravado brand bras - used them for a year with my first, and just bought new ones for DD (due in a few weeks also).

This exactly.

You'll want to have some right away. I like the Gilligano brand from Target a lot. And they're soft cup so some minor changes in cup size arent a big deal. Everything still fits

Get nursing tanks now, get bras later. I recommend the Bravado brand nursing tanks (much, much better than the target brand or motherhood brand).

I really appreciated being able to buy nursing bras from the lactation consultant at the hospital (Sibley). She came to the room with a good selection, and I got to try on a bunch of different types. Because I was in the hospital, I was not shy about letting her help me with the fit; I would have been less comfortable in a regular store. The prices seemed fine. While it is true that you may get "larger" after you are released from the hospital (though might only be temporary), keep in mind that the nursing bras tend to be more adjustable than regular bras, with lot more hooks, etc.

OP here, thank you for the information!

Me too. You can even where them as tank tops (especially now with warmer temps) since they come in a few different colors.

Bravado brand from the Breastfeeding Center. Got them around 36 weeks. No problems fitting after delivery.

Where else can I get nursing bras?

I second the notion of buying nuirsing tanks now (You can wear them as regular tank tops long after you stop nursing too). They are so stretchy and comfy, I only bought 1 real nursing bra. In fact, I'm not nursing anymore, and I have on the tank top now. :o)
