Anyone else feel weird about exercising?

Anonymous
This is my second pregnancy. During my first I exercised regularly until I started having contractions at 6 months and was put on bed rest for the remainder. This time around, I am afraid to exercise given my previous experience, I'm afraid something is going to go wrong. I am taking zumba classes and I'm thinking of dropping them because the idea of jumping around so much with this little little bean inside of me makes me worry.

Anyone else feel that way?

I stopped doing anything that required any kind of jumping -- I stuck to elliptical and then when I felt too heavy for that I moved to the treadmill. I've had friends who have done higher impact stuff but I can't bring myself to do much more these days (just over 6 months). I think the fact that the bean is sitting on my bladder has influenced my decision -- I kept having to leave the elliptical to pee! Good luck!

You can swim, walk, bike, lift weights, do yoga, pilates... exercising doesn't mean impact. Take it easy.

I worked with a trainer once per week throughout my first pregnancy (primarily strength training), plus low impact cardio (bike or elliptical) and pre-natal yoga ... you certainly can workout and stay in shape. I've been more restricted this pregnancy, and am really starting to look forward to the day when I can start working on getting my body back.

Yes and my husband keeps asking me if I want to go for a run with him? Hell to the no is what I want to tell him, I am exhausted.

running sounds horrible now. But I hope to get back on the eliptical, weights and mommy yoga in second trimester when I have energy. Just doing the stroll regimen now...

If something worries you, you should stop--why add to your stress? There are plenty of low-impact ways to get exercise. Normally we are used to pushing our bodies to do more because if we "listened to our body" then we'd just sit on the couch and eat donuts all day. But I think in pregnancy it's wise to cut yourself some slack and if something feels uncomfortable or wrong, for whatever reason, don't do it! Find another way that makes you happy.

My OB said exercise was just fine, but not to let my heart rate get above 140 and to not get overheated. So I've been using the eliptical but just turn the intensity down and keep a fan nearby. I'm still doing weights, but I try to keep my heart rate at a modest level for that, too.

my ob encourages exercise. i worked out 5-6x week with 1st pregnancy and am doing the same this time. i had a super easy delivery & recovery and was walking 2+ miles 3 days after delivery. i chalked it all up to my regimen while pregnant. if i'm wrong, so be it. the worst case scenario, i am wrong have a hard labor and delivery this time, but am in good shape coming out of all of it. i'm ok with that gamble.

and my ob only worries about internal body temperature and says that the heart rate thing (no higher than 140) is an outdated, unsubstantiated restriction. the concern is to increasing your internal temperature b/c that can affect a fetus. an increase in heart rate has no effect.

I think the prevailing wisdom (from what I read) is to keep doing what you're doing (because your body is already adjusted to that) but don't start anything new and don't push yourself. I continue to do my step aerobics but I no longer jump or leap or kick in full vertical split. I continue to lift weights but take it easy on the weight. I stopped ice skating because even though I am confident of my ability to stop and weave around people, I cannot be sure that some moron will not tumble or come to a dead stop or collide with me. I will probably take up swimming and something prenatal yoga-esque some time soon (I'm almost 4 months). Oh, and if I feel tired or sleepy I have no guilt about skipping class and camping out on the couch.

Honestly, my feeling is that during pregnancy exercise is not so much for weight control (assuming you are healthy) but for keeping these muscles supple and strong and ready to snap back.

I just found out I'm pregnant with my first and I'm also feeling a little weird about exercising. My husband and I started training for our first 10K just 2.5 weeks ago (before we knew we were pregnant), and I don't know if I should quit know and plan to just walk the race or what. I'll only be about 10 weeks at the time of the race - and I'm taking it really slow (short runs twice a week with a long run on Sunday). BUT: I am technically "pushing" myself by increasing the length of my runs each week, which seems to violate the conventional wisdow re: exercise while pregnant. I'm not sure what my doctor would say about it because I won't have my first OB visit for another week or two. Unfortunately if I want to run this race I feel like I can't really stop training now - I either need to keep running 3x/week until my doctor tells me otherwise, or decide to play it safe and quit now. What do you ladies think? Are 2-3 mile jogs OK for somebody in the first trimester?

I wouldn't train for a 10 K personally

To the 10K trainee -- I'd leave a msg for your OB asking what to do. Everything I've heard is to not increase your running distance/speed while pregnant.

OP, what does your Dr. say about exercise? I was also on bedrest, and even walking put me in jeopardy. So I would be concerned also. But if your Dr. okays a low impact exercise, then it's probably beneficial to stay moderately active.

I have a few preggers in my classes. They don't jump, they modify/replace anything too fast or bouncy and they take water breaks every couple of songs. One girl left for her last trimester, but I know many women who teach Zumba while pregnant all the way to the end (I don't know if I could do that though!). If you miss your Zumba, just take it down a notch. But at the same time, listen to your body. If it's too much, you can just walk to Zumba music : ) There's also Zumba Gold (slower) and Aqua Zumba.
