any preschool suggestion in Fairfax, Oakton, Vienna?

Anonymous
We are desperate with our current preschool (Fair Lakes Children Center) and need to change the school which is not religiously affiliated. However, I have never thought that most of them would be filled by this time of the year We are so frustrated with this issue now. Please help, any suggestion would be appreciated. I am woring full time and until I can schedule a tour with eah of them , their waiting lists get even longer. They don't put you on the list over the phone, of course

You can use the Fairfax County Childcare search website and look for preschools by zipcode for the areas you're interested in. My son is at Merritt Academy which is near Rt. 50 and Nutley. I'm not sure if there is a waitlist for the Fall. The school does have a Christian background. At most I think the kids say a little prayer before lunch, thanking God for their food. I'm not sure if that is too much for you but we've been happy there. My son has been enrolled since February. You can also check A Child's Place on Rt. 50 and Prosperity. I know several families there and they've been happy as well.

WOW! that link is great! Thank you so much.
We went to visit Merritt Academy. I am OK with prayers before and after meals and good ethical behaviour. I just don't want the school's orientation to be religion. I like Merritt Academy, however while we were having the tour a teacher was behaving very hard on a 3-4 year old boy. She was screaming to him so bad. Me and my husband was shocked , actually the lady who was giving us the tour apologized from us for that experience. I am sure this is a very unlikely situation for every class , but my son's chance to be in that teacher's class is too high. So we couldn't be sure. On the other hand Child's Place has opennings for next fall but they are full for the summer. I am planning to visit them today.
Thank s for all the info.

I second Hunter Mill Country Day School.
Not sure where you are, perhaps it's too far for you but Village Green Day School in Great Falls might be worth looking into.

I'm the 9:43 post. Sorry you had that experience at Merritt. Once you start to tour different schools, you'll get a feel for what you like and what you're looking for. I also toured A Child's Place. I thought it was nice but Merritt is much bigger and I thought offered more. I liked that at Merritt my son could rotate classes throughout the week (Music, PE, Spanish/French, Creative Movement, etc.) and wasn't confined to the same classroom all day. Coming from an in home daycare, it was important for me to have my son interact with more kids his age, (especially more boys--his daycare was mostly girls) and there are currently 4 K3 classes at Merritt (for the 3 yr olds). I know when we took my son for his playdate at Merritt, they had already placed him with a particular teacher. I remember the admissions director telling me she was tough but fair, had lots of experience and may not be super affectionate as some of the other teachers (give lots of hugs, etc.) I've found that not to be the case and she is always giving my son hugs!! The teacher has always been very willing to talk to me about my son when I pick him up and I've had no problems with her. She's been great!! I also like that there is also a full time assistant in each class room. I'm still relatively new to the school so I don't know anything about any of the other teachers but this has been my experience so far. Let me know if you have any other questions!!

Sleepy Hollow Preschool in Annandale is superior. The facility is attached to a church but they are in no way religious. We were there four years and visitors and parents raved about the emergent education there.

Simply Fantastic.

We're at Carousel Child Care, a full-day daycare with a preschool program. My daughter is still a toddler, but I have several friends whose kids have attended or are attending preschool there, and they're happy. (My 18-month-old daughter already knows the numbers up to 5 and can sing the alphabet song, so we're happy too.) The address is in Annandale, but it's near 50/Gallows/495.

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Hunter Mill Montessori School on Hunter Mill Road in Oakton.

It's located on the grounds of the Unitarian Church but in its own building and it does not have a religious affiliation with the church (though they do sing a short blessing before lunch). We have been going there for years and cannot say enough good things about it. It is such a special place. Fantastic Montessori education, amazing teachers, wonderful parent community. Full-day program is 8am - 4pm; preschool-only is 9am-12pm. There is usually a waitlist but it's worth checking into.

My neighbor loves Hunter Mill Country Day School. It is very non-academic and play-based and they spend a lot of time outdoors, they have animals, etc. But they have a very long waitlist, last I heard.

Another friend of mine has her kids at AppleTree II on Nutley St in Vienna and really likes it. And I know their hours are good for working parents.
