Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
|
My son was just diagnosed with attention deficit, but not the hyperactive form. It is the inattentative form. The specialist said I needed to have my son go through diagnostic testing for autism and that both fall under the same "umbrella". Is this true, can you really have both. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Also, the doctor mentioned the autism center at Hopkins or going to Childrens for a workup. Is the KK institute connected to Johns Hopkins? Thanks. |

KK is connected to Hopkins.
You might also look to see if NIH is still doing evals as part of their autism study. We had a very good experience there, as have acquaintances, you get a written report, it's free and you can get an appointment fairly quickly. I'll try to find the link. The docs were young and great with DC, and they are cutting edge in terms of knowledge. |

I think this was it.

| What kind of Dr did you go to? What does a work up entail? Yes, some feel ADD or ADHD can fall under the same umbrella or are part of the same spectrum as ASD, although the DSM has them separate. Technically if a child has delays in more than one area of development (language, social, gross motor, fine motor) they can fit with a pervasive developmental disorder and some feel many kids fit under than PDD umbrella. |
| Many kids on the spectrum also have ADD or ADHD. |
| I don't know if they are "under the same umbrella" but it is common for kids to have both. |
| I am assuming kids with PDD can also have ADHD and that under the same umbrella as well. Can I ask who went to who gave you the diagnosis? |
| I actually have one of each. One ADHD Kid and one with ASD, so I definitely believe that they fall within the same genetic range. |

I just finished this book, it was a great but quick read

| Hi everyone, op here. Thanks for the info so far. We go to Dr. Conlon in Bethesda. We have been seeing him for years. We followed him from Childrens to his own practice. |
| what is the book about? My older son has ADHD . Ihave another younger son who has something. Not really sure yet. Does this book help? We see alot of specialists. Does your child have PDD? |
| I'm surprised Dr. Conlon referred you somewhere else for an autism evaluation after you've been with him so long. Do you know why? |
