Do you hang your diplomas? At the office? Home?

For most people, having a certain degree isn't a requirement for their job, but it's nice to see that the attorney you're talking with actually graduated from law school and is a member of the bar!

I always thought MDs and JDs had to display diplomas so patients and clients knew they weren't going to quacks or charlatans.

Is it 'cool' to act like you could care less about your Diplomas?

Everything I hang up in my office is a conversation piece. That's the reason you should hang them up, not to be a braggart. You should also have some bit of pride in where you went to school. Now if your school is the online kind I would probably leave those in the closet.

People really start conversations about your diplomas? LOL!

Not trying to be "cool"... honestly don't know where they are amidst the clutter and rubble. In a box somewhere I'm sure.

The registrar's offices at my undergrad and grad have my transcripts... that's all I need.

ha, ha. i read this thread when it first started back in april and thought about it this weekend when i hung my up in our home office. funny that someone else resurrected it. for what it's worth, mine are up because my mom had them framed way back when, and we didn't really have anything else to put on the walls in the office in our new house.

Yes, all at the office. All 5 of them. I think it's out of place to hang them at home. At work? Sure.

To 14:45 - the diplomas on my wall are conversation starters.

I have my grandfather's bar admission certificate framed and hanging on my wall. It's many decades old. I love that I come from a legal family. My diplomas show that the law is in my blood.

My favorite is the huge Texas diplomas (no idea what school) prominently hanging in someone's foyer - LOL!

My diploma is hanging on the wall at my parents' house. I remember bringing it home, my mom snatching it from my hands and immediately putting it into the frame.

Diplomas on the wall are par for the course at my law firm (biglaw), although we almost never have clients in our actual offices. For all of the reasons stated by above PPs, I have mine up. One is from a good school and the other is from an Ivy, although many of the other attorneys at my firm have more impressive credentials than I do. I worked my ass off to achieve what I've achieved and I see no problem putting it out there. I also have photos of my family and other assorted mementos that reflect who I am, and I enjoy seeing what other people put up in their offices as well.

People who think hanging your diplomas means you're bragging or think you're better than others probably went to community college.

I have no idea where my diplomas are. Both are from Ivies. DH's are around in some box in the attic. I even came across my brother's MBA diploma stuffed in a box. If they got thrown out, I wouldn't care. I am not a lawyer or doctor, so I don't need to hang them in my office. I have no interest in looking at them in my home office. I do have my grandfather's grade school diploma framed and hanging in my powder room. It's antique and cool.

Oh, and my degrees cost a lot of money and took a lot of hard work too, but I've got far more interesting things to look at.

Do you take them down after so many years because it shows your age and that you should have accomplished other things by then?

Lmao...that's what I was thinking. You should be proud of the work and money you put into a degree. Regardless of my work experience, the education made me who I am, and I embrace that. If you are offended by someone else's accomplishments than maybe you should go out and get yourself a degree and quit whining and making excuses. Give me a break people.

As an archivist, I advise everyone to frame theirs and hang them up (wherever). They are much less likely to get lost or damaged. It is really nice to have your grandparent or great-grandparent's diplomas, and it carries interesting/useful information too. If you leave your diplomas in the attic or basement they are likely to get water damaged or moldy or creased up. Unfortunately I speak from experience and from not following my own advice. Think of them as artifacts worth preserving.
