How is reading levels established and is there some kinda rating that shows the average across different schools? |
FCPS uses the DRA-2: the Developmental Reading Assessment. On level first graders begin at Level 4 and are expected to pass a DRA Level 16 at the end of the school year.

Fountas and Pinnell would be D/E to J/K by the end of the year. |
I don’t think the DRA scores are shared publicly so that they can be compared across schools. |
They used to be. But with COVID, it’s been impossible to get accurate scores for the past two years. The spring scores would be posted. That was impossible in May 2020. And in May 2021, not every kid was in person. |
That used to be one of my favorite ways for assessing instruction at the ES level when we were looking for a house to buy--looking at the change in reading levels between 1st grade and 2nd grade. High reading levels in 1st grade tell you about the SES of the area (which you usually already know) but consistent improvement between 1st and 2nd grade gives insight into the instructional quality of the school.
So you may be able to look at past year's data but because DRAs are an in-person intensive assessment, there's no 2019-2020, 2020-2021 data. I don't know if you can see older data on the school profiles anymore. |
What is the FCPS standards for DRA for the ES grades? A lot of districts have them listed, but FCPS does not? |
Our FCPS ES did virtual DRAs in the fall and in-person in the spring. |
My DD tested at DRA 4 at the beginning of the year and she was considered below grade level on the i-ready test. My DD is pretty advanced in genera, half the class were above DRA 16 at the start of first grade. |
yes, but I don't think they are reporting the data bc it's not the official way they are supposed to be done and so likely misleading. |
