Leaked Docs: [St. Albans] Poised To Crack Down on ‘Harmful’ Humor

Long seen as a conservative holdout among private schools, the St. Albans School could soon expel students for one off-color joke.

The Washington Free Beacon? I'm sure such a reputable news source doesn't have an ax to grind in the culture wars . . .

"St. Albans did not respond to a request for comment about why it would take the "good faith" of those reporting misdeeds into consideration but not the intent of the alleged perpetrators."

I'm not surprised that they passed on responding to a loaded question that assumes something not stated in the text of the memo. The fact that impact is of utmost importance doesn't mean that intent is not taken into consideration in the punishment.

It's too bad that the Free Beacon isn't able to approach topics like these with some minimal level of intellectual honesty.

This article has literally no facts, save these:
St. Albans is a school
St. Albans is a boys school
St. Albans is in dc
St. Albans is old
St. Albans has a dei Director
St. Albans is (possibly) discussing hate speech and (possibly) what it is and (maybe) what to do about it

That’s…pretty much it

this article isn't journalism; it's cultural voyeurism

Whatever. I don’t think STA will collapse if it expels a kid who thinks it’s funny to draw swastikas on stuff. Free Beacon might be pro-swastika though.

This makes STA look good in most people’s eyes.

Ever seen the Larry David scene with him and the kid and the sawstika? We are talking about kids as young as 9. If it's truly equal opportunity cancel culture there will ne no boys or teachers for that matter left at the school. People say stupid things that can be misconstrued different ways. This is truly dangerous stuff. It's interesting how the faculty lets bigoted anti Christian offensive and similar comments thrive. Disgustingly , DEI is nothing more than pay to play--if schools want accreditation they have to pay for DEI resources from the accreditors. There is no tolerance for racism but part of education when one is young is learning without absolute punishment what is and isn't racism. This will create a huge backlash.

"It is the impact of hate speech, rather than the intent of those perpetrating it, that is of utmost importance." Wowza. Child who simply repeats a word he has no idea the meaning of because the impact is important he's expelled? How oh how if the we can't even utter the words will these kids know what hate speech is?

That article makes conservatives sound awful, not St Albans. It is not a conservative value to abide by racist jokes. If you are part of the St. Albans community, you would trust the administrators and teachers who devote their lives to the education of boys. If you were part of the community, you wouldn’t want your Jewish or black peers to be made to feel lesser. That idea is not radical. Men of honor wouldn’t promote racism or anti-semitism in the light of day. Trump so ruined the politics of Republicans. I also think highly of the Head of Landon, at whom the article takes shots.

Stop stirring the pot. The DEI policy at STA is hardly controversial. If you don’t like it, best go elsewhere.

This is a dumb comment. First, the STA policy doesn’t mean that if a kid “accidentally” utters a word he’s going to be expelled. It just puts families on notice that you can get expelled for saying racist and bigoted things. I hope that’s not a stretch for anyone. Second, these are middle and high school boys. They know full well what the words mean. Third, you suggest that someone needs to be able to say racist words at school so the kids will understand what hate speech is; that’s just utter nonsense. It seems you really want to be able to say racist things; no one is stopping you, but you should be prepared for the consequences.

Agree. Sadly though, it seems that many people who call themselves Conservative have decided that racist jokes are an important political principle for them.

This feels like manufactured outrage to me. If Op doesn’t like private schools’ DEI initiatives, shop for a decidedly conservative private. Or public schools offer stronger first amendment protections if you’re dead set on Larla/o being able to tell racist jokes. Strange thing to feel strongly about.

Alright dumb dumb a kid hears a word in a song or older kids saying a racist word and repeats it. Regardless of the kids intent, according to the draft he can be kicked out. And yes, if teachers do not talk about why a word is bad, presumably that means actually saying it, then how does one know how or why a word is racist? I for one would like my kids to understand the nuisances of racist language which means the words must be spoken. Middle school ages at STA range from 9 to 14 or 15--still lots of real world ignorance and plain old innocence. Making racist jokes is bad. Ignoring a child's intent/ignorance and just looking at the impact of the spoken word now that's stupid. If it's a senior making bullying racists jokes and/or comments definitely warrants expulsion. The point is this policy leaves way to much room for abuse of power. Expulsion for uttering a word is extreme.
