Now if they could add in also not rebuilding an aging high school and using Crown instead once it has been used as a holding school to rebuild one less than originally planned aging high schools. We do not need another high school to pay to operate during declining enrollment and it makes sense to not renovate a decrepit current high school when there is an available new school. MCPS needs to be consolidating schools and closing the most underutilized/in disrepair not expanding. The more old schools in need of massive repair that can be closed with students attending underutilized in better repair nearby schools, the better for the fiscal future of MCPS.

Well just move Wootton there, no need to renovate Wootton then

I am a Wootton parent and I have been shouting this but I don't think it will happen. Just close the school. It needs a full demolish and rebuild and I don't think we need both.

+1 Move all of Wootton which would not fill Crown, and also move parts of QO, RM, GHS enough to level the capacity of all the neighboring over crowded schools.

Done.

While I agree that shuffling the deck could fix the overcrowding issues without the need for a brand new school, I have serious concerns about MCPS' ability to fairly decide which communities should get bussed to new schools. There are enough special interest groups in their ear that undoubtedly, decisions will not be made in everyone's best interests.

OP here. This is a serious post. We can’t homeschool and can’t afford most private schools. So this is what we have.

I realize my views are outside of the norm but also feel that being on screens, testing, being given homework, and being graded this young are all detrimental to the experience of childhood and unnecessary.

If any other parents hold similar views, how have you coped? I think you can opt out of homework? We would stay screen-free at home.

Not sure if there is a similar program or network here, but in my old community of Shepherdstown, WV, there was a homeschooling co-op network where kids would essentially rotate between home school households based on parent availability. I believe you had to make yourself available a certain number of days a month to stay enrolled in the program. Households with dual working families would just have to use a PTO day or two a month to meet the requirement.

Do you really live in a bubble? Seneca valley, Gaithersburg and Richard Montgomery were ALL done with kids on site. God forbid your precious snowflakes have to hear a bulldozer or miss a football game

Yes, I do as we’ve never been through a remodel and in falling apart schools. It makes no sense. Use a holding school.

MCPS cannot break its agreement with Gaithersburg. It would have to find a holding school elsewhere. Crown is not an option.

Almost every school that’s been renovated had students on site.

The agreement with Gaithersburg just says the land is for a public high school. Seems like a holding school for high schools would meet that definition, especially if the intent is for Crown to eventually open as a school of its own.

The agreement was made to relieve overcrowding of Gaithersburg schools. To open Crown but not relieve overcrowding of Gaithersburg schools is breaking the contract.

Which Gaithersburg high schools are overcrowded?

According to the Boundary Study Data Tables. Quince Orchard is at like 120% utilization and Gaithersburg is at like 106%. Then factor in that Watkins Mill is expected to explode with the completion of the Village Town Center, Bloom Village, and eventual Lakeforest Mall projects, those students are going to have to be shuffled around to avoid Watkins Mill reaching similar levels.
Again, not really anyone's business. They will tell us what we need to know with this kind of situation.
Decided to log in and not hide behind the Anonymous tag. Gaithersburg HS has been great for my 10th grade daughter. Having moved back here from the Eastern Panhandle of WV, the diverse population at Gaithersburg has really made a huge positive difference for her in finding her place in high school. The teachers have been highly supportive and accommodating of some issues my child has in ways other schools have not in the past. I'm sure other schools in MCPS would be just as good for my daughter but I definitely have nothing bad to say about Gaithersburg.
