Short shorts in late 40s?

Anonymous
I am pretty active with running, walking, biking, and working out, and also yard work and gardening, and running errands around town. So I spend most of my hours in some sort of sporty casual athleisure like a tank top and short shorts. It just occurred to me that maybe I might be considered “too old” to wear this kind of outfit around town to run errands.

What say you? I’m often mistaken for younger, and if I had to estimate, I probably look closer to 40. I am not really athletic but I am somewhat fit.

On the one hand, I feel like I don’t care what everyone else thinks, I can wear whatever the f I want. But also on the other hand I’m just curious to know what people generally think of older women wearing higher hemlines.

Yes, you can wear what you want. Period.

But if I was going to elaborate, I would say you should definitely wear what you are comfortable wearing. Further, you should wear what makes sense for your activities and lifestyle. Finally, you should wear shorts when it is hot.

Sounds like you're doing it all right. 😂

You are fine

I’m 55. In great shape. I wear athletic shorts all the time during the summer. You are fine, OP.

I am 35 and wear crop tops, short shorts and go braless. Wear what you want!

Man here. Of course wear what you want, but I'll say women of that age look good in that if there's no cellulite.

Wear whatever you damm well like.

I hate this idea that because of a number, clothing options are limited.

I’m 51 and stopped wearing shorts years ago because I don’t look good in them and don’t feel good in them. Long linen pants and skirts/dresses are what I wear when it is hot [bonus is the fabric creates a breeze as you move, so I think they are cooler than shorts]

That said, if you want to wear shorts, there is no expiration date on it. That’s the best part of ageing - not caring.

Enjoy dressing as you please!

Wear what you want. When your knees start to sag, I it's time to retire the short shorts when out and about, unless you don't care, then it's fine.

How short are we talking? I don’t want to see anyone’s ass cheeks regardless of age.
I’m also late 40s. I have a 5 inch inseam that I really like but those are hard to find. I have another pair that are maybe 4 inch that I think are too short but I wear them anyway because it’s hot.

Thanks you all rock. Yes the more I think about it, the more daft I feel for even caring what people think. I feel comfortable in my athletic short shorts and skirts. Maybe 2” inseam? I don’t like how longer shorts look on me because I’m petite (5”4”) and they make my legs look short and stubby and also I just want to be as cool as possible because I can’t take the summer heat.I have muscular legs and the only lengths that work for me are very short, right at the knee, or maxi length. I’ve tried Bermuda style shorts and I hate them.

So I’ll keep on with my short shorts! and fwiw, I don’t give a damn what you all wear either, wear what you love!

Eh, you aren’t in great shape and are late 40s wearing “causal athleasure” tanks and short shorts- this sounds totally frumpy to me, never mind how your legs or backs of your arms look. If you want to be in tanks and shorts I think that can look fine, but you need to have better quality clothes. I think some 3-5 inch inseam chino shorts and a linen sleeveless shirt would look better and more put together.

OP, I picked these up the other day at Target. Highly recommended for staying very cool and flattering without any extra bulky fabric.

All the high school girls wear the lululemon 2 inch hotty hot shorts… it’s not a great look on people in their 40’s even if they are super fit.

You have NO idea what shape OP is in. Stop embarrassing yourself. Your envy is on full display.
