APS VPL is a dumpster fire

Kids still don't have schedules or teacher assignments. Kids of varying grades being put in "waiting rooms" to do nothing. What is going on? The communications from APS are woefully inadequate.

Probably what's wrong is they are trying to create an entire school out of whole cloth in 90 days and can't find staffing.

42 open VLP teaching positions on APS' Careers website. APS said at the townhall that they'd be using subs and third party providers (like Virtual Virginia).

FCPS limited their program to only those kids with certified medical reasons. Their program has 0.2% enrollment of student body whereas APS currently has 3%. And I haven't heard of any issues with FCPS' program.

Who is hurting by APS opening the program to those parents who don't follow the science that school is safe? Those APS kids who have certified medical reasons to be in the program!

Notably, 17 of those 42 VLP open teaching positions are for SPED. Don't wait to hear anything about this travesty from Arlington's Special Education Advisory Committee. Lunch Petitioner is highly involved in the committee and she and Ventilation Woman (and Smart Restart) had been pushing APS to open the Virtual Program to anyone who wanted to switch to virtual! APS prevented an even larger disaster by not listening to them.

Let's not forget how much of the ARP funds ($11M or 58%) they sunk into that program at the expense of so many other things for the 97% of other students.

APS should have just referred students to Virtual Virgina and been done with it. What a mess and waste of money.

They have been talking about a virtual program as a solution for overcrowding for years. At least this will show that it's not going to work.

Yes, that's the silver lining. I feel terrible for these kids, though. Especially the ones that really needed DL for medical reasons.

0 questions about the VLP from the School Board at last Thursday's School Board meeting (for a major new program that APS is using $10M+ of federal funds for).

Also, Duran listed it as a "Bright Spot" for APS this past year in his presentation.

How many kids sign up for this? Not trying to be flippant, but we literally know no one.

I think 3% of APS students...

Kinda doesn’t matter though. APS said it would teach these kids, and apparently many have no teachers. I don’t understand how no one asked about this at the SB level, or that Duran/the virtual administrator didn’t know that if there was no teacher in the first day, that would be a problem.

It’s because APS is too full of chiefs. I’m an in-person teacher and I’ve had the worst start to school ever. There’s the Chief Officer of This, and the Director of That, Supervisor of the World, but none of them help me get anything done, my classes are huge, and they don’t work with kids. How about ONE head of each BS area, and you hire two teachers for each director or supervisor taking up space.

I caught a bit of the virtual open house. There are about 40-60 kids in each elementary grade level. They said there would be 3 classes per grade for K-2.

If Arlington parents would stop insisting that any new HS include a pool and all the trimmings, maybe you could have modified Kenmore with the money that's being wasted on this program.
