What are your teacher contract start and end times at your school? Particularly interested in hearing from the HS teachers.

Is that right? 6 1/2 hours?

7.5 hours and a duty-free 30 minute unpaid lunch.

Waiting for someone who takes 2hr lunches and stands around drinking coffee for 20 minutes of every hour while waiting for the next Zoom call to say you don’t work hard enough.

Same. Have both taught and worked an office job. Teaching is infinitely more exhausting and scheduled. No "team lunches" or taking 10 in between calls or even a bathroom break lasting more than 30 seconds where you didn't have to flag someone down to watch your class to pee.

Our administration makes it known that “Teachers are not “on contract” or “off contract” based on what the clock says. These work hours are when parents and staff can reasonably expect that they will be available”.

Call HR if you cannot work with your admin.

The contract does not specify exact times, just the overall time as a rule. You should be responsive to staff, parents, students, but you do not have to respond 24/7. You are on a professional contract and need to respond professionally and timely to all "constituents." Timely is based generally on a reasonableness standard, but there may be some specifics detailed by your administrator and/or regs.

This is an anonymous blog, so you can only trust anything you read so far. You can learn your rights. Do some research.

This is also why I left Fairfax/Virginia “right to work” for a county with a union that has some power. Without contract hours, my colleagues and I were just ordered to stay several hours before or after 3:30 for things they decided we had to do. “It’s not in your contract but we expect you to stay an extra two hours three times a week with no extra pay,” etc.

If we get a sub we have to say it is for a 7.5 hour day. Our contracts say the principal can require us to do other duties as assigned. I have never worked in a school where we were asked to stay late more than a reasonable amount, although I frequently stay late in order to get the job done. There’s no way to do it all without that, unless you want to take it all home.

This is nonsense.

This. 110%. There’s no term “contract hours” anywhere in the FCPS regulations. Teachers are not hourly employees. They’re salaried. The only time teachers are “off contract” is in the summer.

Uh, no. Check your math. That’s 7.5 hours.
