My boss wears the same dress 5 days in a row

Anonymous
I just moved to a new job 2 months ago, and now realize that my boss has a strange habit when it comes to clothes. At first I just thought she really liked yellow, or she really liked orange, because I would see her wear these extremely bright yellow dresses or several orange suits several days in a row. Then my co-worker pointed out that she actually wears the same suit for a week, then changes to a new one.

I guess if I mapped it out, I probably get 4-5 wearings in a suit or better made dress before I take it into the dry cleaner, so I'm not even sure that there is a cleanliness issue here.

I'm sure it's not important in the scheme of things. But it's weird, right?

Does she go home every night? A woman I worked with would hook up after work, sleep over at the guy's place and come back to work with the same clothes the next day a couple days during the week. Or maybe your boss has several sets of the same suit like a uniform?

That's really weird. I definitely don't wash or dry clean after ever wear (other than underwear), and I go several times with suit jackets that don't directly touch my armpits (if I have a shirt underneath) and pants, but I don't wear them ever in the same week!

If she doesn't smell, who cares.

Well, there are a whole bunch of things in life that aren't important, but they are a little unnerving.

My boss is definitely not hooking up. And she is high high income. I can't imagine why you would buy 5 copies of the same suit. Plus, these aren't quiet blue suits. These are really bright suits in colors like magenta. It is really obvious that the suit is the same as the day before (and before and before).

It is rather odd. Especially if she has multiple different outfits and didn't just buy 3 of the same one. Whatever though.

I know someone like that in DC. High-income, high influence, and four out of the five times I see her, she's wearing the same lime-green blazer. I agree it's strange.

When I lived in Europe, I noticed that folks did this... they showered every day, but then put the same clothes back on, for a solid week. Is your boss European?

That's interesting, PP. I hadn't ever heard of that. My boss is American, but I know she's lived for half her life in Europe (husband is Dutch I think). Maybe that's it.

so if YOU don't DC your suits after every wash what's wrong with wearing then every day vs wearing once every week for 5 weeks?
we don't live in a hot place that would require clothes to "air out" anyway.
I can't get over how judgemental people can be! leave the woman alone!

I don't think I am judgmental, so much as curious. I have already thought it out (thank you) that it's the same as what I'm doing, hygiene wise. But no one else does this here, so I'm interested in it.

Yes, that happens in Europe. Some people pick the outfit for several days. The same is true for kids. They wear the same get up one two or three or four days in a row. It makes sense if you want to cut down on laundry, if you wear the same thing until it gets dirty. We wash many clothes that are perfectly clean.

Did she grow up poor and used to wearing the same clothes daily?

I guess here in the US we try to mask that by spacing out our outfits (even if it hasn't been washed in between).

Actually, when I travel for business, I usually only bring 2 dresses. I figure I never see the same people more than 2 days in a row. And the fact is, for a 7 day trip, that is about all you need.

Maybe she has to make the sacrifice to keep her kids in private school.
