At first the album sounded like one and the same endless song to me. Which I guess is fitting, given what we now know about the muse - The One, and it went on forever, hahaaa.

But once I figured out what was going on in the lyrics, I was hooked. It brought back memories from my youth and stirred so many emotions about all the torture, and all the poetry. And now I listen to it on repeat, daily.

It’s a brilliant album, albeit a bit chaotic. Much like Taylor Swift and Matty Healy.

I doubt she meant to create the impression that Marty is end game for her. That makes her current relationship seem like a fake. I do wonder if there’s a bit of a F you to Joe in here - it seems now that he was a place holder, not a big romance, while she pined for someone else.

PP here - you know, I’m just remembering that I’m often “meh” about her albums, then find myself listening on repeat. Why is that? I’ll give it another try.

I do think she bearded and had fake PR relationships for years. I honestly thought she was in the closet and covering that up (like everyone thought she was having a secret affair with her best friend, can’t remember her name) but perhaps it was all about Matty Healy. Who knew.

So I think I have her figured out with the you only get into her songs on repeat. There isn’t a melody really, just a few notes repeated over and over so melodically there is nothing to bring you in except when she gets to the line she sings loudly (or shouts) and that sticks in you head. Her secret is in the middle school girl who whispered secrets to you during class. You know, the one who would say juicy stuff that would make you lean in and ask her to repeat it. You were drawn into her because of the whisper made it feel confidential and you wanted the dirt on everyone. That is what Taylor does with her songs. It is why you want to hear her songs again and why she feels manipulative.

I came into this thread trying to figure out why so many people love this woman when I find most of her songs dead boring. This might be it. I wasn’t interested in middle school gossip in middle school, and even less interested in middle school gossip as an adult. But now I understand why all the girls in my son’s 3rd grade class are crazy about Taylor.
