For those living in Mount Rainier, can you share what it's like... what are people like? is it pretentious? do neighbors actually talk to each other?
|
| My BFF lives there, I posted in the “small town feel” thread about it. I would characterize it as excessively neighborly and not at all pretentious. Do a search for Mount/Mt/Mt. Rainier and there’s lots of info here. |
I think it's an oasis from the DC bubble, yet still next to DC. Younger families, people are very friendly, not at all pretentious, very social place without people getting into you business, there's no "keep up w/ your neighbor" jive if that's what you are getting at. |
Yes to all of this. It’s so close to DC, yet has a small town feel and everyone is nice and helpful. Great sense of community. Lived here since 2017 and it’s been such a great move for us. We came from condo in Bloomingdale and in non-rush hour traffic it’s 10 min from our old condo to our house in Mount Rainier. |
| moved from MtR to NOVA and we regretted it... soo isolating now |
I live in Mount Rainier and have a lot of friends in NOVA, and they are always so surprised that I know all of my neighbors. |
| It’s eclectic. There’s a variety of professions in the neighborhood. Ppl don’t value that on this forum |

People are genuinely nice here. |
We thought about moving after retirement, but decided against it. This city is filled with young families, not as many new retirees. |
Where did you end up? |
Downsized home in Bethesda. |

Back in the day (40 yeas ago) it was a very blue collar, generally white neighborhood. Over the last 15 or so years, it has gentrified as the first wave of GenX fighting high housing costs and souless suburbs "discovered" it.
The housing stock is generally Cottages and Bungalows, but have generally been renovated. It has a very down to earth, very "real" vibe, with a lot of community events and spirit. In another time, we could see ourselves living there, but are a tad older and hadn't come across it in a timely manner. But, I have some co-workers/colleagues who have lived there in the recent past and it is absolutely a wonderful and unique place in the region. |

You will know so many neighbors. If you have kids, you will know even more. It's very friendly, a little shabby, very caring.
The only downsides are public schools that have had some troubles (there are two ESes, I'm not sure that there's any meaningful difference but Thomas Stone has had some leadership churn as I understand it), the exodus of high achieving and more affluent students from the middle and high schools, and high property taxes related to our silly and dysfunctional "city" government. The new restaurant (Pennyroyal Station) and opening soon wine bar (Era) are great amenities and I really hope they make it. Glut is an institution and is beloved by many. Joe's is another great community force. |
Pennyroyal is absolutely fantastic! I'm excited for Era to open! |
