Getting rid of an old junk car

Anonymous
We have an old (2005) truck that we got from family that was a salvage out of state and has salvage title in Virginia. We’ve used it but it’s time to be done with it. It currently starts and runs but power steering is out. We don’t feel comfortable selling it to someone. I’m not sure we’d get any trade in for it.

Anyone have any experience with “We buy any cars” or any other junk tow and pay car buying?

Try peddle, enter make/model/year/condition to see their offer, likely just a few hundred bucks. If you accept, they pick up the car and give you a check

We buy any cars -- Does not buy just "any car"

Bring it to Carmax. If it can drive you will get $$ for it. I got 1K for a 17 year old car. Dealer offered me $100 for it.

Donate it to FCPhttps://marshallacademy.fcps.edu/academics/automotive-technology (scroll to the bottom)

I wondered. Don’t really want to drive out there and be rejected!

MCPS also has an auto program at Edison HS. We donated there. Very easy.

APS has a car-donation program at the career center. Where are you?

Not sure about all of them, but Carmax buys most cars.

We’ve donated two cars to Shepherd Center and one to Goodwill. Each time the tow driver was shocked that our cars were driveable and came with a flat bed truck.

To clarify the tow truck had flat bed not our cars.

We Buy Any Cars actually gave us $1500 for it!

We have donated two cars. You pick the charity that you want, you contact them (one we called on the phone, one we found on-line) and you open a charitable donation request. You provide all the information, they give you instructions and will come and tow it away. If they can reuse it (like Vehicles for Change), you will get a tax deduction for the full KBB value of the car. If they can't, they will auction the car off and you will get a tax deduction or the amount they can auction it for. You get the documentation emailed and Snail-mailed to you and you put it into your taxes for the next year.

So much easier than spending a bunch of time trying to find someone who will actually purchase it. In my case, I drove my car into the ground. There were multiple systems failing on the car and it wasn't really drivable. I still got an $850 deduction for the car. Most importantly, I just put it in the driveway. They scheduled a time to pick it up. A hour or so before the time, I put the keys and the title in the glove compartment, and they came and towed it away and I was done. About 2-3 months later, I had the paperwork I needed for my taxes, dropped it in the drawer with all of our other charitable receipts and it was ready to put on my taxes the following March. Done.
