I need help. I don't know how to put makeup on other than how I was taught at age 30. I'm now 48. With the pandemic I've gone from wearing a little makeup rather poorly, to wearing no makeup at all. I do not want to wear a lot of makeup, nor do I want to spend a lot of time in the morning. But I could benefit from a few basic steps that would make me look a bit more polished. FWIW, while I'm age 48, I look younger and have decent skin. (Also, with regards to complexion, I'm white.)
With that, what makeup sites or tutorials would folks suggest? And what makeup items -- and lines -- would you recommend? I'm happy to spend money on a few high-end products. Do folks recommend BOOM? I stumbled upon this line yesterday after a quick on-line search and it looks perfect, but that could be due to sophisticated advertising. Finally, to the extent that COVID precautions allow, where should I get a makeup lesson? There's a Sephora near my house but the folks who work there have so much makeup on I"m unsure they'd understand what I mean by "minimal." Thanks. |
CC cream. |
Gucci Westman's instagram. Makeup artist, and she has a makeup line (Westman atelier). I think she's 50 now and has that natural-ish look. |
Do you have any teenage girls in your life? I asked a 16 yr old daughter of a friend if she'd help me - we met at Sephora and she got me kitted up and then I took her for a snack and brought her home. She then taught me how to apply everything I'd bought. My big takeaway was "tap, don't rub." |
Is your skin dry, oily, normal, or combo? |
Watch some YouTube videos by Andreea Ali or Tati Westbrook. |
Here’s my routine:
— two kinds of cream, one of which is a revitalizing type serum that adds glow. My skin tone is even so I don’t bother with foundation — eye cream then cover up stick for under eyes. I started using tarte on my teenagers recommendation. — an eyeliner just on upper lids in brown to fill out my lashes that are thinning. I would use mascara but it always runs on me. I use pixie brand from target. — eyebrow mascara to fill out where my brows are thinning. I use Almay in brown. And I usually just do a moisturizer on my lips but if I want color I actually really like the neutropenia mosistiiring lip stain. So basically I’m just replacing what nature has taken away. |
Try the Ilia line. Look online or at Sephora. I'm older and it's the best I have found. It is light and does not accentuate problems with "older" skin. They have beautiful videos on social media of normal appearing (and older) women applying their makeup and they look so beautiful. It's very natural. |
I am loving the face stick from Bobbi brown’s new line called Jones Road. It’s a chubby pencil, and you use it like concealer/foundation. Just crayon it on and then it blends beautifully (for me). I have pretty oily skin and I think that helps or use a moisturizer first. That, some eyebrow wax and mascara and I’m out the door. |
I was going to suggest ilia too. I’m 38 and like a very natural look. Love their skin serum, concealer, mascara and the cream eyeshadows. PS I buy it via the site Credo which is my new Sephora. It stocks only clean brands, ships very very quickly and has a more curated product selection so it’s not overwhelming to shop there. Everything I’ve tried from that site has been great. https://credobeauty.com/collections/ilia |
I'm 46 - I love just kohl eyeliner, outer half of my top and bottom lids and extending out a bit. Plus nude/mauvey lipstick. In search of kohl myself that lasts more than few hours that isn't waterproof. I hate waterproof eye makeup. then it's so hard to remove |
^^ same poster - What I use much more, however, is skin care. I have 3 moisturizers, 2 serum, 2 eye creams |
How is brow mascara different from using regular mascara on the eyebrows? Asking in earnest, I’d be willing to get it if there is a difference. I have used regular mascara on my eyebrows a few times. Thanks. |
Check out Hot and Flashy on Youtube. I know the name is off-putting, but she is so practical. I'm early 40s and I use tons of her tips already. I particularly appreciate her tutorials on eye makeup, because I found as my eyes aged and the skin got looser, and crepey, I had no idea how to apply eye makeup. I think I got by when I was younger because when your skin is youthful, you don't need as much technique. But when everything is going to wind up in a fine line, you need to know what you are doing.
She has lots of easy, natural looking tips for handling older skin. I also like her product recommendations. |
Eyebrow gel feels thicker, and the bristles are denser on the wand (at least the one I use). Seems better for combing/keeping hair in place. I prefer to use different products for hygiene reasons. But I'm sure it's ok to use mascara on your brows. |
