I used to dye my hair at home all the time, but was convinced a while back by a stylist that it was bad for my hair and that I needed to get it done professionally if I wanted it to look good for my wedding. So I've been spending $$$ for years on expensive balayage and highlights and convinced myself it was worth it.

Covid threw a wrench in that. I wound up growing out my existing highlights. I finally got a decent haircut this spring. But I decided to go back to home dye kits just to see.

It's so good! I dyed my naturally dull brown hair with streaks of gray using a L'oreal Superior Preference Golden Blonde (so not even one of the fancy, expensive home kits). It turned my hair a dark golden blonde with lots of shine and great tone (no brass at all). My hair has not dried out, it looks super natural despite being single process, and I have gotten endless compliments on it over the last two months. It's basically the color of my daughter's hair now, and probably pretty close to what mine was like when I was a kid. All for $10 and a couple hours effort every 4-6 weeks.

Anyone else have success stories? I think my colorist has officially lost a client.

I've been using L'Oreal preference for years to hide greys. I use the shade that's closest to my natural color every 6 weeks. My hair is healthy, shiny, I always get complements on it.

I find the salon is great if you want highlights and lowlights for texture, or if you want to lighten your hair, or if you want to make a drastic color change.

For covering greys or going just a little darker, a box does just fine.

I have home dyed my hair for years. I tried professional a few times and it looked no better and they stained my skin. Plus, I do not have time to go sit in a stylist chair for hours during the day. Doing it at home means I can do it at night and just watch some Netflix or read while it is on my head.

Definitely start doing your roots first letting the dye sit and then only touch up the rest than the rest for about ten minutes. Otherwise the ends get darker over time. And put some Vaseline on your skin to avoid stains. Buy some make up remover wipes to clean up any dye stains on your skin.

I’m now officially back at the salon post-vaccination. I’m glad some people out there are saving money and getting great results!
