Applying to attend out of boundry elementary school in montgomery county

How does the process work? We are considering buying a house where the assigned school is actually further away than the one we would prefer our kids to attend. Assigned elementary school is 2+ miles away, while the one we would prefer is 1.5 miles away. Would the county allow our kids to attend the school that's actually closer (and better, I think).

In a word: no.

You can try to apply for a change of school assignment (COSA), but I understand that you must have a very compelling reason for the request. There must be some sort of documented hardship that would make it difficult for you to attend your assigned school. Check the MCPS website.

No, you can't get a transfer because the other school is closer.

A friend of mine just received approval for a transfer for her son for K. She applied, her daycare provider was in another cluster. She was denied. She then appealed and it was granted. Her DS has some other social/speech issues which played into the decision. I am not sure if it would have been approved, based solely on the before/after-care.

I read a number of MoCo decisions which denied a move request because the preferred school was closer. One applicant actually could walk to a different school but was denied.
