I want to buy shokupan but don’t know where to find it. I live in Bowie but am happy to drive a good distance to find the bread.
Hoping someone can help! |
Have you tried making it? It is easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5B71ROC6zlk |
Try in Rockville:

Google! I just did and there are lists of Japanese bakeries there. Do you only want bakery locations or are you looking for personal experiences of the best people have tasted? Entirely different. |
Thanks! I don’t want to make it. Too many steps, and I’ll be focusing on other parts of the meal. If I can’t make it easily in my bread machine, it’s out of my comfort zone.
Any bakery that has it is fine; I don’t need the best ever version, just something authentic. I appreciate the Rockville recommendation. |
The Rockville store says out of stock for its breads. ![]() |
Not authentic shokupan. Shokupan involves making a gelatinous mixture first. |
Shilla Bakery in Ellicott City. |
Hana Market at 17th and U street NW. |
Our Korean bakeries (HoCo) carry it - do you have one of those near you? |
Curious which recipes they are particularly good for? |
Hmart, 99 Ranch, or Shilla's Bakery, these are all chains so just go to the one closest to you. |
This is the recipe I use. Love it! I make it all the time.
https://www.theflavorbender.com/japanese-milk-bread-recipe-hokkaido-milk-bread/ For the OP, are you looking for rolls or for a loaf? The Korean/Chinese bakeries in the asian grocery stores always sell sandwich bread which is that same type of bread but I don’t know if they sell rolls. And I find Paris Baguette in HMart to be insanely expensive, so I’d recommend Lotte instead. |
Japon bakery, Shilla bakery, Teamania in Rockville |
