Is it a mistake to buy a Mercedes with 80,000 miles?

DH says modern cars can get up to 200,000 miles
He’s looking at buying a 2007 Mercedes with 80,000 miles for our 16 year old daughter.

I wouldn't. I would look for a Honda or a Toyota. That car is going to be nothing but a maintenance money suck in a few thousand miles and an oil change will be twice the price.

Nope. It’s a 14 year old car.

Mercedes cars have a deserved reputation for safety. And, yes, the car should last until 200,000 miles if it was (and will be) properly maintained.

The main downside is cost: be prepared to pay "Mercedes" prices for routine maintenance, minor repairs and probably one or two major repairs. The gas mileage won't be very good.

Premium gas, lots of repairs. The seller put 20,000 miles on it per year, that’s a lot! I just sold a 2012 with that on it.

No way.

First of all, a newly-licensed driver should start out w/a reasonably safe + reliable vehicle like a Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla.

And even w/80,000 miles on it - I wouldn’t purchase that brand of vehicle since all the maintenance & repairs will co$t more in the long run.

16 and a Mercedes????

It's a money pit. You have to take it to a dealer for most of the issues due its sophisticated electronics. A regular mechanic can't fix it. My friend, a former Mercedes certified mechanic, told me this.

I love driving a Mercedes but wouldn't buy it.

The seller put 6800 miles/year, which is nothing. You need a good mechanic, but in 2007 not too many technical issues other than navigation---which nobody uses due to iPhones. 2007 probably have Bluetooth so dd can use hands free phone but not enough screen to distract ie tesla. As long as it's not a 12 cylinder due to cylinder fracture or an an 8 cylinder due to fuel usage, Any of the 6 cylinders are pretty bulletproof mechanically---assuming the car was serviced well. The 6 cylinders are taxis in Europe, no reason not to buy.

Calm down. It’s a $10,000 Mercedes.

Yep. We had friends who bought a Mercedes new and kept it a long time. They grumbled a lot about the maintenance costs compared to their other vehicle.

As long as you’re prepared for the maintenance and repair costs, it’s a good, solid car. Make it a priority to find a reliable independent mechanic, has made a huge difference in our finances.

It is a very bad idea. No need to buy 14 years old car with a lot of miles and out of warranty for such a long time.

A 14 year old car for a new driver no. Unless it's a Toyota or Honda.
