Summer carpool.

Please don't answer if you've been doing this all along, that's totally fine, but I'm curious for those of you who haven't been carpooling kids over the last year.

With the information now that outdoor spread is unlikely, will you be more comfortable doing carpool if windows are down and potentially kids are masked? Or will you wait until the kids are vaccinated?

We've been relatively cautious, but once adults were vaccinated are pretty much willing to let our kids do anything that's not directly in the faces of other people.

That's our risk tolerance. You'll have to figure yours.

In case you were wondering, in a bus with windows part way down there are 20-40 air changes per hour. Experts recommend at least 4-6, so this way exceeds those standards.

There was a recent case of unmasked adults in a closed car for 2 hours spreading COVID to each other, so don't do that if you aren't vaccinated for sure.

Thank you. This is OP. We have many friends who are ready to put the pandemic behind and jump all-in to normal life. We are among those experience a bit of that anxiety and easing back into some semblance of normalcy. Kids are 9 and 11 so vaccination will be a while.

We just started carpooling again. Yes the kids wear masks and we have the windows down. Honestly, I'd be OK if they didn't wear masks, too. Presumably you're driving them someplace they'll be together anyway (like my carpool where the kids are going to school.)

I know it’s relatively safe, but no, I’m still not doing it.

We have just started again. Climate change is also a huge danger to human life, and we are all low risk (adults vaccinated).

We recently started carpooling. Kids and adults wore masks for the first couple of rides then all of us stopped. Same with the windows. They open them if they want, based on weather now.

My kid is doing 4 weeks of camp. One of those weeks is different from the other three weeks and I am carpooling to that one. All 4 parents are vaccinated and kids have been playing together a couple of times a month, mainly outside but sometimes inside. I won’t ask the kids to wear a mask in the car and I will have the AC on I assume so no windows down either.

We will not be carpooling. Not worth the risk.

The issue is kids will not be vaccinated so you only care about protecting adults, not kids.

No. My kids are low risk. They have less chance of dying of this than they do of the flu with a flu vaccine. I trust other parents to assess risk for their own families.

Doctors and experts like Joseph Allen have validated this approach, and these people are far from COVID deniers.

Its not just about dying or hospitalizations it about them getting sick and possibly having long term health issues. I think its sad you aren't concerned about your children or other children's health. This is why Covid continues to spread. Yes, they are covid deniers. We need to stop the spread and this behavior is not stopping the spread.

No. A friend got Covid from her friend and the only indoor time they spent together was 10 minutes in a car with the windows cracked.

Were they adults? Age matters for ease of spread, people. Please read science.

It ain’t causing it, either. The black and white approach of your post causes spread because it makes people think, “oh screw it. I can’t be perfect so might as well go to the bar.”
