If you have a Sleep Number bed (or similar) - tell me about it. Likes/Dislikes?

DH and I are figuring out that he likes a softer mattress and I like a firmer one. The price tag seems crazy to me, but sleep is important so we're considering this to replace our king bed in an upcoming move. If you have one or have had one - was it worth it? Is there anything similar that we should consider?

Initially, we ordered a Dreamcloud mattress and it was way too soft and actually caused my husband to develop back pain. Luckily, we were able to return that mattress.

We then went with the Sleep by number because like you I like it a bit softer and my husband likes a rock hard mattress. The Sleep by Number has been really good for us. I also like it because when I was pregnant and needed to change the setting to even softer for a few months to get comfortable, it was easy to do. Once I had the baby, I went to my original setting and it's been nice to have the flexibility. For us, the cost was worth it.

I have had mine for 15 (?) years--it is old enough that it doesn't even have the numerical controller, just arrows for firmer and softer.

I would get another one in a heartbeat if this one went bad, but so far it is as good as new. I like that it's consistent and that if I want firmer or softer, I can adjust.

My advice is to get the most basic model and get your own mattress topper/mattress pad. I have the basic mattress + featherbed + ordinary mattress pad.

Highly recommend. Not juust for the ability to set your own firmness, but also, because it has 2 mattresses, so you won't wake up every time you SO rolls over, gets up to go to the bathroom, etc.

I bought a sleep number after a very expensive spring mattress developed ruts after just a couple of years. I have had it now for almost 15 years and it is still working great. I got a pretty low end model without much cushion above the air chambers, and some of my neighbors with higher end sleep number with thicker memory foam layers complain about ruts in their mattresses.

I'm 15:29--a featherbed or mattress topper that you buy separately and can replace as needed is much better for this reason.

It is an air mattress wrapped in foam and that is how it feels, so if you don't like that, you will never like it.

But if you do end up liking the air feeling, it's terrific because:

It never sags.
It transfers almost no motion - one person can toss and turn and the other can sleep right through.
You can change the firmness whenever you want, which is great for my back, I can make it firmer when it is acting up but then go back to softer when it's better.

Np - Love the positive reviews, especially from those who have had it for such a long time. Do any of you have experience with it helping with snoring?

No, and I’m not sure why it would?

One of the advantages is said to be the ability to lift up the snorer and stop the snoring.

Oh, mine doesn’t lift.

Yes, it’s a setting called Partner Snore. I’ve used it on DH, and it’s just enough to get him to turn over in his sleep, which usually ends the snoring. Not 100% efffective, but better than kicking him...
