what is happening to my lawn?!!

we rented in Falls Church for a number of years and never had any issues with our huge grassy yard... all we did was mow it every week or two.
now having had a house in Rockville for 2 years, weeds have totally taken over the grass in our lawn and it looks awful. is this normal?? am i supposed to be putting down weed killers regularly?

I also have a yard (in NW DC) that was weed-free for years and this year sprouted weeds all over in the last couple of years. No advice, but it seems to be something about this year. (I'm not using any kind of weed killer because it's the space the dogs play in.)

Winters are milder so weeds don’t die out as easily.

you could try reseeding yearly (now and in the fall) so that the grass crowds out the weeds.

Yes, it's normal, depending on what grass was put down initially.

Corn meal gluten. But it’s too late/too early now. Start weeding.

what type do you get and where do you buy? thanks

Espoma and Preen both have natural weed preventers/killers. I am trying the overseeing method soon.

My yard is tiny so I plan to just get new sod every few years. I don't want to use weedkiller and I'm not going to weed by hand. But yes: I'm in NWDC and it gets very weedy.

MoCo has banned a lot of weed killers so make sure whatever you put down is allowed (if that is important to you - I know some people in my neighborhood are ignoring it.).

I live in Western Pa and apply a Scott’s weed & feed preventer that takes care dandilions and greens up the yard. Look at the Scott’s products. There is a summer and fall fertilizer too.

People please stop using Scott's seed!! Its low quality garbage.
This is a fact. Buy your seed from a nursery. I buy mine at Merrifield but other places sell their own seed as well. Did you know that you can buy seed specifically for shady lawns? Yes they sell specific varieties for the type of lawn you have.

Yes, normal. Is it crab grass? You need preemergent for it. Some years it doesn't show, some years it takes over the whole lawn.
Then other weeds start.
I know bcs I redid my whole front lawn last year. I barely had grass! I ripped it all out and reseeded. Put Tenacity, put other weed killer. Yet, when my beautiful grass started to show, oxalis also started to grow.
In the end, even though I had most killers for it, I called True Green.
They killed it. It is not that expensive to have them come a few times per year and it was worth it.
I have nothing of the sort in the back yard, it is free growth for all.
But, crab grass kills everything and it is not a good thing, it leaves the lawn brown and gross if you do not take care of it.
I do not care about what others say, I like my perfect front lawn.
In fact, lawns are an indication of how you maintain your house. If lawns are starting to go down, it means the neighborhood is going down.
Sadly I can't do anything about the neighbor who has dandelions all over his lawn.

It might be true about scotts seed.
I, however, saw no difference from the sees I got from Johnsons' nursery and from Home Depot Scotts.
This is in upper MoCo. I now prefer Stadler's nursey in Laytonsville.

I saw this as well. Do you know if True Green has to follow the guidelines?
