Centers for the Highly Gifted

Anonymous
We sent in an application for our son - any idea when the acceptance/rejection letters go out?

And does anyone know what the acceptance rate is (applicants versus how many accepted)?

Thanks.

What are the qualifications for admission...IQ scores, etc?

It's not clear on the website and I'm very curious as I may be looking into in the coming years.

Applications consist of parent statements; teacher evaluations and comments; and test scores - there is a specific test taken in January (I think) for the highly gifted centers.

They said letters will go out in the beginning of April.

Is there an IQ cut off? What test do they use?

I believe they use the Raven test (which tests for intelligence) but it is just one factor figured in, along with grades, teacher comments etc.

Raven is what's used in 2nd grade global screening. HG Center applicants take a different test in January of the year they apply.

Which test do they take in January?

They specifically don't tell you. The letter will say what your child's scores are and give the mean scores of kids accepted, but won't tell you what test it is.

This may be a dumb question, but can you apply for these programs if you don't live in Montgomery County, but plan to move their if your child is accepted? TIA

@23:45, no, you have to be an MC resident to apply.

Thanks. Obviously I meant move "there" not "their."

What is the Raven test? Is this given in addition to the Terra Nova given in 2nd Grade?

My kids are now a bit older (middle school) but at least a few years ago:

the second grade testing includes the Raven's (a visual/spatial reasoning test) and a test of verbal reasoning and memory.

in third grade kids can apply for admission to the center programs, which are for fourth and fifth grade. They look at teacher recs, parent recs, grades, and the second grade scores. They also administer the SCAT - the same test used by Johns Hopkins for CTY in the elementary grades, but a different version - either older or younger, not sure which. And, they have the kids write an essay, for a writing sample.

how competitive admission is varies with the school. Each center program draws from a specific area, and some are more in demand that others.

You don't have to attend MCPS to apply (kids apply from private) but you do have to be a county resident.

The test score is the most important criteria. Also, my DC went to Cold Spring. It is marvelous.
