Share your itinerary for Scotland, England and France

Assuming some posters have done a trip across the pond that included 2 or 3 of these countries, what did the itinerary look like?

I’m hoping for two weeks abroad with our kids (who range from 10 to 17).

If we try to squeeze in all three countries, should we start at the top and work our way down—potentially ending in the south of France for some coastal time?

We don’t mind moving from place to place, and we’d rather be busy seeing the highlights (don’t mind missing some stuff) than struggling to fill time.

If we limit ourselves to two countries, which ones?

DH and I have both been to England and France. Kids haven’t been to Europe.

If you've both been to England and France I'd do Scotland and somewhere in France with a flight in between. Skip the overland travel. Really enjoy yourself in two places. Especially with only two weeks why move around a lot?

One option might be 3-4 nights in London, take the train to York, spend 1-2 nights there, take the train to Edinburgh, spend 3-4 night there, fly to Paris, spend 3-4 nights there and fly home from Paris.

The high speed train to Scotland is very easy and York is a great stop off, but that doesn't give you much of the countryside in any of the countries (although you could add nights/day trips if you wanted).

Fly into Paris. Stay 5 nights. Train to London. Stay 5 nights. Train to Edinburgh. Stay 4 nights. Then you’ll have to take the train back to London to fly back home.

For 2 weeks, I’d pick two locations. You will not be bored lol! Either England (London)/Scotland, or England and France. I’d make that choice first and then decide what cities/towns.

There aren't nonstop flights from Scotland to here currently but there are plenty of one stop flights from Edinburgh or Glasgow, and that probably would be better than getting back to London just for a flight (or you could put London at the end and try to get a cheap flight from Paris to Edinburgh).

If I limit it to England and Scotland OR England and France, what two-week itineraries would you suggest?

I wouldn’t want to spend a week in London and a week in Paris. I’d rather venture out to the countryside and coast.

We did a week in London and a then week in Paris.

London with day trips to Bath, Cotswolds, possibly Oxford or Cambridge (both are worth a visit). Chunnel to Paris, spend a day in one of the bois outside Paris, or Versailles, or an overnight in Normandy. 5-6 days is not too little for London and Paris.

We did the following for London + Scotland with my then-14yo DS for a combination of some family time + some adult vacation time (pre-Covid).

I sent DS ahead to a summer residential tech camp in High Wycombe for 2 weeks. We flew to London a few days ahead of his last day. Went by train to collect him & he joined us in London for a few days.

Then, we did the overnight train to Edinburgh. Rented a car and drove to Aviemore. Lots of outdoor hikes and activities there. After 4 days, we drove to Isle of Skye, dropping DS off at an Outward Bound in Loch Eil for 1 week, while we carried on to Isle of Skye.

Picked DS up and drove to Glasgow; stayed there for a few days together, where I spent a fair amount of time doing family history research. Then back to Edinburgh for the last 5 days together during Fringe Fest. Saw some shows & squeezed in a college tour of U. of Edinburgh. Flew from Edinburgh.

I would do something like: Fly into Paris. Eurostar to London. .Pickup a rental car on the outskirts of London. Drive to Scotland. Concentrate your time in old town Edinburg. Drop the car in Edinburgh. Overnight train back to London and fly home.

If you want to drive in the UK— and that’s a big if— I would pick up the car in Edinburgh and drive around Scotland for a few days— see castles, or Loch Ness or Skye or whatever your preferences are — and then drop the car in Glasgow and fly home from there.

If we just stay in England for two weeks, this itinerary could work with modest tweaks. I have no desire to go to Stonehenge or Stratford upon Avon (btdt). I’d prefer to see more of the coast and Cotswolds aiming for off the beaten path. Thoughts?
