minus the subway tiles, which look like they were put in within the last few years
Is it a dream kitchen? Nah. But it looks like it's been around a long time, isn't done up in fads - I could see using a kitchen like that for decades. I think the off white cabinet color looks more "timeless" (barf at that word, but here we are) than any stark white, or trendy color of the year. I guess the thing is that no one would install this kitchen - what makes it timeless, is that it looks like it's been in the house forever. Maybe the countertop is newish, and - as I said - the backsplash looks new to me. But the cabinets look organic to the house. (Was fantasy browsing real estate listings, saw this kitchen, and here we are) |
Anything that’s simple and clean will always be timeless because you can decorate around it. That’s why white and black are considered timeless and why white kitchens are so popular and shaker cabinets and subway tile. Those things have been around forever and they’re inoffensive. But some folks don’t want boring, they want color and trendy things and that’s okay too. |
I don't think flat panel cabinet doors are timeless. The ability to cut wood like that, without the desire to elaborate on it, is a pretty specific time period and therefore dated.
But the colors and simplicity, yes, I agree. |
Yes, those cabinets look old AF.

Wish you gave a better picture since you can't see everything. What's the point? |
That's the only picture I had. It's from a real estate listing. |
Those cabinets look original and like plywood. |
The house is from 1914 so probably not plywood, if original. Though I guess I don't actually know what woods were being used in the early 20th century. |
I’ve had that kitchen. The drawers stick and the cabinet doors don’t always lay flat. It’s not timeless, it’s just old.
I’ll happily take my drawers on soft-close glides and actual flat doors and pull-out shelves. The wood stain may not be the latest and greatest, but it’s far more functional than the kitchen in the picture. |
Don’t like the cabinets. Look cheap like plywood. |
Whatever, as long as they don't slap matte gold/brass handles and fixtures everywhere. That trend needs to go away. |
Don’t like the cabinets either. Looks like the pulls were added later |
The fan, the radiator and the cheap faucet are killing it for me. |
Looks like the out a new counter on old, cheap cabinets and put new hardware on the cabinets and put up some subway tile. $2000 max. |
I agree with you, OP. It's not a dream gut reno but it's done in a way that doesn't say "settled for the cheap n trendy home depot floor model cabinets and sheet tile backsplash".
I am trying to keep this in mind while we figure out how to update our sad old kitchen on a limited budget. What do I tackle first, the baltic brown granite or the awful oak cabinets? |
