What are the best options for a young gifted and talented boy in this area? My son has tested as 99.9% (150+ on the WISC) and I know from my own childhood that this dramatically narrows the universe of educational options for him. He is a naturally sweet, good-tempered, and extremely curious child. We could afford private school and would consider moving if necessary to get closer to a good program (ideally would like to stay in DC but could move to NY or Boston too). Finding the best educational environment for him is our top priority. |
How old is your child? |
OP here. He is 5. |

My sister and I both tested in that range (high 140s/low 150s). Top private schools were appropriate for us. YMMV. |
I recommend a Montessori school. |
Public schools magnets |
Did you not find the curriculum too structured? We’re either of you able to work several grade levels ahead? |
Montessori was a poor fit because he masters a task after 1 or 2 tries and then wants to move on, whereas Montessori demanded more repetition in practice. |
What are the most well regarded public magnet programs for K ? |
Thomas Jefferson in fairfax |
Do you have to test in to attend? |
Yes but that is HS. I don’t really think there is anything for little kids. For super highly gifted Montgomery will be better as their program is very selective but even there starts in 3rd or 4th. Then you need to apply to the magnets in MS and HS (Blair the best there I think). For Fairfax the gifted program is more of an advanced program than truly gifted as it take a pretty large share of the kids. Starts in 3rd. Once you are in you have the right to go to the advanced MS track too. You’d need to apply to TJ for HS if you want to do that. |
For Kindergarten? I think the earliest magnet-equivalent is FCPS' AAP program, which starts in 3rd grade and is neither particularly advanced nor magnetic. |
OP here. Thanks for the replies. I'm surprised there aren't more options around here given the size and education level of the area. There seem to be many more options in Boston (both public and private options for lower school) and at least a handful more around NY/NJ area. |
