Natural Redhead Starting to Grey...

Anonymous
I have long natural red/auburn hair and I am beginning to see grey hairs around my temples. Who do you love in the DMV that colors or highlights virgin red hair? I am looking for something natural and need to hide my greys. Tia!

Following, but ugh. I've never found anyone in DC who does this well. Partly it's just the nature of the beast -- gray hair is dye resistant and red hair dye fades incredibly fast. Many red hair dyes try to counteract the fade by starting out very intense, but on a natural redhead this can be very jarring. I've never had bright red hair, but the first time I had it colored, it was so intense and just looked so fake to me.

I have actually given up to some degree and instead do a red gloss periodically. I like the Kristin Ess gloss in copper, but I had to try a few in order to find one that matched my tone well. It doesn't cover the grays perfectly, but looks so much more natural than any professional process I've gotten done. It's also really gentle on my hair so it stays shiny.

But good luck! If you find the holy grail, I want to book them too!

Use this until you have enough gray to actually go pro:

I use the red and the blonde together since my auburn has lighter highlights naturally.

So envious of all you natural redheads...

I think pp is right that it is hard to color red hair and have it look natural. I'm going for a blend it in strategy instead of covering the gray. A stylist at Bloom in Tysons gave me honey blonde foilyage highlights with touch of copper in the mix. The white hairs at my temples blend in as the lightest part of the highlight. I've been impressed with the color jobs I've seen at Bloom while in the chair.

OP. This looks really promising!

I am starting to grey too and my stylist says he has a rinse for me. But my also naturally redheaded mom aged beautifully into a strawberry blonde, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Not what OP asked but something to consider.

Redhead here, also starting to gray at temples. I am letting it go for now. Once summer hits, I'll have more blonde and strawberry streaks / highlights from the sun so waiting to see how well it and the gray blend and go from there.

I'm surprised to hear about the grey! I also have red hair and have no grey at all -- just white strands mixed in with the red.

I use henna. It does look a bit fierce the first week or so but I'm not so worried about that.

It's like weird magic. I think it will be just the thing for what you describe.

I'm 53 and just a few white hairs at the temples. A tap of Wow powder and they are gone.

OP, I have a friend who is a natural redhead with a few greys, and she paints henna over her greys. It is natural and natural-looking, and henna is permanent, unlike chemical dyes. It is probably hard to find a hairdresser to do this, and it takes hours with the henna paste on your hair to set, but you could try the Lush kind on just your greys.

I'm a strawberry blond and have some white strands- it just makes me look more white-blond than the pink-blonde I've always been. I dig it. If I keep it washed a couple days a week it looks best.

Any redheads having hair texture changes? Mine is getting even curlier.

I really thought I would have longer before I started to see them too. I think Covid stress has aged me 5+ years.
