Best Bleaching for Bottled Blondes

Anonymous
For those of you with naturally dark hair but color it blonde, what does your maitenance process look like? I prefer all over color and don't like the look of highlights on myself.

I've wasted so much $$$ at expensive salons that claim to specialize in color, but ultimately prefer the color best when I DIY at home with $15 in product from Sally's. Multiple visits to salons left me with horrid hot roots or an ugly brassy blonde color. At home, I can get a nice dark ashy color, but my hair is fried and frizzy and breaking all over the place.

Has anyone managed to DIY at home without losing their hair? If you get it done regularly at a salon, how do you find a good colorist who won't give you hot roots and can get a nice ashy tone?

I bleached platinum at home for years. The key was using a protein filler and toning in between to keep it from getting brassy.
