Sound barrier fence for backyard

Anonymous
My parents bought a house that backed up to a quiet street. That was 45 years ago. Today that street has become a major suburban artery. It is no longer pleasant to hang out in the backyard and enjoy their pool. There is a 6 ft high stucco wall that acts as a partial visual barrier. But every truck and school bus that goes by can look right into the yard. So I want to help them fix this. Does anyone have experience with this? The wall is about 25-30 yards long. We don’t have much of a budget but it’s become a priority for me. Help!

Thanks. That’s part of the plan. I need advice on hardscape, tho.

Your contractor may need to apply for a permit to build a taller wall.

There are special walls meant for sound-proofing. You should really look at the sound walls and things like it. Kind of like this- https://stonetreefence.com/sound-wall-noise-barriers.html

I'd add thick, dense shrubs and layer them then add water features, like water fountains.

American Pillar arborvitae + inkberry + viburnums/assorted native shrubs/Spicebush are what we're using nearest the noise. We're also adding taller trees closer to the house like black tupelo and sassafras for fall color and they are pretty narrow. I think it is important to have evergreen visual protection for year-round help.

There are taller ones than American Pillar/Full Speed A Hedge, too, if you need it. The extra trees add extra sound absorption during the summer when we are actually outside. We're trying to make sure it looks nice and not just like we're trying to block sound so we're going for more decorative plants like Alabama Snow Wreath. Pawpaws have a nice fall color and tropical look to them, too.
