Emergency vet recommendations in Arlington/Fairfax

Anonymous
My dog is having what I think are back issues - he is MUCH less active than usual, walking slowly, occasionally yelps when picked up but otherwise doesn't seem to be in pain. Vet did a physical exam and X-ray and found nothing, so we're trying painkillers/anti-inflammatories, but if things don't improve we will be doing an MRI. However - vet said that if he completely stops walking/loses use of his back legs, I need to go to the emergency vet immediately. I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst (unfortunately, back issues and subsequent surgery are very common for his breed) and would like to have an emergency vet picked out in the event I need to take him in. Thinking about South Paws and like the number of specialists they seem to have, but reviews online aren't great. Would really appreciate any and all suggestions. Thank you!

Does your vet have suggestions? Ours suggested Southpaws but my dog passed away before we could go there. I would go see a specialist before it gets to that point, if you can afford it. MRIs are really expensive, unfortunately.

Southpaws near Fairfax Hospital on 50. Our dog had a herniated disk and lost use of his back legs. Had MRI there and then surgery (by a neurosurgeon). Was back to normal after recovery. It is not a cheap endeavor.

Yup... we've spent nearly $10k at Southpaws for pet emergencies. But they're great!

PP here. It was about $10k total - MRI, surgery, and then a 3 day stay (I think).

The other place a lot of people go to is the Hope Center in Vienna. I don’t have experience there but have heard good things.

It's likely a pinched nerve or a slipped disc. Sometimes a sleeping pill and manipulation makes it all right again.

Thank you all. Hearing these prices, I'm glad I have pet insurance! But helpful to know what I may be in for.

I have luckily not needed this yet, but I have a puppy and live in DC and was told that if I need an emergency Vet I should go to South Paws because, even though it is further and inconvenient, it is MUCH cheaper than Friendship Hospital. Any insight on that?

Yup friendship is insanely expensive. We have had great experiences with Southpaws for our medically complex pup. Truly the most compassionate care.
