My 15 year old son has a fair number of blackheads. He doesn't really care, so I could leave it alone. It's not really bad. Probably pretty typical. At first, I thought I could extract them for him with my extraction tool, which he was not thrilled about but let me try---and that did not go well. LOL. Turns out it's a lot easier to do it to myself. And I felt kind of weird about it, although I don't know why. I would have done it on a daughter.
If he was a girl and in normal times, I would probably have scheduled her a facial with an extraction. He's actually been the dermatologist last year, and his skin was looking pretty good then. But I don't think they do extractions. What do you do with sons who have blackheads? Leave them alone unless it's REALLY bad? Get a facial in about a month or two when more people are vaccinated? The pore strips don't work. |
I’d taken him for extractions at the salon. |
Teach him how to extract them himself |
I took my son to a dermatologist and they prescribed differing and one another that I am blanking on now. His skin is so much worse! I guess it was too sensitive for prescription treatments. |
This is your answer. He doesn't care so back off. |
Can you try a biore strip? |
Answered in the OP. |
Stridex red pads twice a day. Even hold them on the skin for several seconds and let them soak. The salicylic acid will dissolve them over about a week. |
Peroxide but what nonsense to leave them as a pp suggested.
Our job is to help our children understand how to become competent adults. Blackheads enlarge pores and lead to bad skin. |
Thanks! Op here. Yeah...I could leave them. But other teens are going to notice. It hasn’t been much of an issue but he’s going to hopefully start socializing more soon. Thanks for the suggestion. Stridex. I was actually pretty lucky to have good skin as a teen so I didn’t have to deal with this. |
This is pricier but more effective and easier on the skin than stridex:

Show him the youtube videos of people who have fields of black heads on their face. Ask him if this is what he wants to end up like.
This one isn't even that bad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVo0SH7cjvY&t=31s |
Dermatologist do extractions. Start with some simple non intensive over the counter products good for most skin types(Neutrogena, Cetaphil, Cervae) for cleaning and moisturizing. See if that helps clear things up. If so great, determine a routine and adjust over time as things change. If not, I would suggest a new appointment with the Dermatologist this year. Hormonal changes have a great impact on skin and how it’s reacts that a Dermatologist could best help treat both with medications and OTC items. |
Our derm extracted DS’s blackheads. |
Paula's Choice liquid exfoliant or Korean blackhead sticks (sold on Amazon). Extractions spread pimples and scar. Differin is not for everyone. |
