Resting heart rate between 80-90 on average

Anonymous
I’m 50, 5’3” and 110lbs. I take my BP every morning and see that my resting heart rate is rarely below 80, and almost always between 70-90 ) and sometimes higher - I *once* noticed 99). I take BP meds.

Is this something I should be concerned about? I don’t feel any palpitations or irregularities. I had an ultrasound and EKG of my heart two years ago before I went on BP meds and everything was normal at that time.

Thanks.

Under 100 is considered normal, so you're probably ok. What does your doctor think?

Do you exercise regularly? Exercise is one thing proven to lower resting heart rates.

I walk 2 miles daily, but no cardio. I should step it up.

Common things that higher heart rate:

Caffeine, dehydration, anxiety. Are any of those things issues?

Is your BP low? It could be that your BP is bringing down your blood pressure to a level where your body needs to compensate a bit by increasing your heart rate.

Do you get cardio exercise in regularly? If not, you should.

If it is pretty consistently under 90 and you feel fine I wouldn't worry, but do try to limit the common things that cause a resting increase (caffeine, anxiety, dehydration)

Oops, in OP meant to say that my heart rate is almost always between *80* and 90, not 70. It’s never been as low as 70.

OP. I don’t drink enough - maybe 20 oz a day which is terrible, I know. I eat a lot of fruit. I don’t really do caffeine and am not usually anxious enough to raise my heart rate.

Mine is like this and always has been. No doctor has ever been concerned. People are different.

Taking BP meds, coupled with hardly drinking any water will for sure make your heart rate a little higher. Drink half your weight in oz per day.

Thanks for feedback! I’m definitely going to drink more.

Do you have a tracker? Like a fitbit? I find this gives me really good resting HR data and lets me see trends that I can connect to factors that have an effect on my RHR.

My HR is always around 80. 5'8, 145. My doctors haven't been concerned.

Anything under 100 is fine. Some people just run higher. Caffeine, dehydration, stress, hormones, etc etc etc all can impact heart rate. My resting heart rate is around 82. I drink too much caffeine, don't sleep enough, and always have a bit too much anxiety.

Mine was high all my life (late 50s now) and never liked the feeling. About 10 years ago, my doc put me on med and, since then, my resting is around 60 or so. Personally, I like it so much better.

NP here. When people say this - Anything under 100 is fine - does that mean over 100 is a worry? Occasional moments over 100 or persistently?

Resting rate is 100+ is a concern. You should definitely check it out. If 100+ when you are moving around or doing physical activities, that's a good thing actually.
