Google expanding in NOVA

Google is opening a new office in Reston and expanding its Loudoun data center. https://www.restonnow.com/2021/03/18/just-in-google-to-lease-more-space-at-reston-station/ It is also expanding its DC office. Good news for the region.

In fact, Google is spending $7B to expand its offices around the country. I know one case doesn't make a trend, but moves like this don't fit the wild "everyone will WFH forever" speculation we've heard the past several months.

Maybe they just are grabbing the real estate when it is cheap and then they will convert it into codos and sell?

There will be four sure some run for the office trend from many parents who will want to escape the involuntary full time parenting.
Just too much of a good thing for many.

Doubling footprint in Reston. Expanding the Loudoun data center and DC office. I mean, it's not nothing. Meanwhile Amazon HQ2 is continuing to be built out. The big picture does not scream "exodus."

Other than on this board and a few choice examples of wild speculation in the media, I really haven't heard folks claim there will be an exodus. I really think there will just be more folks who work 2-3 days a week from home regularly across sectors. It was already pretty common in mine. When real estate is cheap, could make sense to expand for a variety of reasons, not just in-person work.

Yeah, we were already at a norm of 1 day work from home pre-pandemic. I'm guessing it'll become 2 days. Now, a few did work more than 1-2 days from home, but we noticed that those folks always got passed over for promotions. I'm sensing a shift in norms, but no exodus.

This is totally true. For many, many workers, going remote means career stagnation.

This isn’t arguing with any of the above, but I went full-time remote for a few years when my kids were young and though I experienced said stagnation, I did receive my annual pay increases and bonuses. The continued work experience and (albeit modest) pay growth put me worlds away in a better position when I was ready to come back into the office more regularly than if I had exited the workforce for those years or gone very much part-time. I don’t think folks should be penalized for working at home at all if they’re producing, and the dynamics that often push women with young children out of the workplace are unacceptable, but I do hope an increase in remote work can help ease some challenges young families face in childcare, budgeting, and desired careers.
